Dimensions of your grinder (KMG) bench?

Sorry for all the simple questions guys:

I'm about to start building a bench for the KMG grinder I ordered. I got the variable speed, 2HP version with a 10" wheel. For those of you with the same or similar grinder, what are the dimensions of the bench you have it mounted on?

I'm hoping to get away with a 24" deep bench, but can go 30" or more if needed. I'm also 6'-3" tall so will build it a little high - maybe 37". I'm at the age where my lower back is rather unforgiving of stress positions.

I'll probably make the bench 48" or 60" long to make space for a vise or the grinding wheel at the other end, but I'd really appreciate your thoughts on height and depth. Especially depth.

Have you thought of buying a steel stand from Harbor Freight Tools? I bought one and put it together with a 5/8 piece of plywood screwed on top. I also cut a plywood shelf which just drops into place. I cant remember the dimensions but it fits my KMG grinder with base plate perfectly. The grinder is so heavy that it never moves once dropped into place. This worked out wonderfully for me and was very cheap to assemble. I am 6'3" and the stand at the highest is perfect for me to sit in front of.

I'd be tempted to wait until you have it.

Build in adjustable legs

You can always block up the grinder from the table top too.

Hold your arms tight to your side with your elbows bent 90 degrees hold something in your hands, and then have someone measure from that object to the floor, take that measurement and subtract the distance from the center line of the wheel to the base of the grinder and that will be the height of your bench top

The grinder will easily fit on a 24" bench top. The front arm sticks out past the table. IIRC, the base is 18X18".

Height is far more important. Stand just like you were grinding a knife, elbows tucked in, and lean against a door jam just like it was a contact wheel/platen. Mark the spot where the blade touches and measure to the floor from there. That is what you want the tool arm height to be.

When I set up my knife shop in 1976, I bought several sheets of 1 1/8" fir flooring plywood, cut them to 3' wide and used the leftover 1' wide piece as a shelf up above the table. I still have them.

Jone and Stacy give some excellent advise. My first setup on my grinder had it at a wrong height and after very little grinding say 15min or so my back would start getting sore. After 45m or an hour it would be unbearable. Now that I have it at the correct height I can grind for an hour and feel fine.

Mine is on a home made stand same idea as the HF one. I like it because it doesnt take up much space and I can move it as necessary.

I bought a couple of steel tables when I got my new gear a few years back. I think my KMG table is 24 x 24 and the one for my 24 inch paragon is like 18 x 30. They work like a charm. If you don't already have it, buy the "tank armor" baseplate for the grinder.
