I just watched this episode today. The cook (star) has to prepare dinner on what is supposed to be a deserted island. He has three knives. One is a tactical folder Benchmade type, the second is a pretty thick Victorinox SAK, and lastly a bolo type machete. He also has a super hot bikini clad model gathering lobsters for him. I guess she lives on the island like Brooke Shields did, in that old movie the Blue Lagoon.
Well anyway he comes across an enormous restaurant size can of beans, you know the gallon size jobs. I guess these washed up on shore. He says, "Great, I have nothing to open this can with!" He then proceeds to hack the can open with the machete. The whole time I'm thinking why don't you use the SAK CAN OPENER?
I don't know if chopping the can open was for theatrics, or he didn't know the SAK had a can opener, (c'mon now) or that all SAKs don't have can openers.
I don't know what model SAK he had, but it was a Victorinox. I would say it was at least the thickness of my Dlx. Tinker and probaly a bit thicker.
Do all of the multi layer Vics have can openers? Maybe they don't and I'll aplogize for being the ass.

I'm not an SAK expert in the least, but I'd sure think any decent sized model would have a can opener on it! Maybe he's just not too bright? Or suffering from too much sun? Maybe he just likes using a machete?

A few might have only the combo tool instead though. If you are not familiar with SAKs the combo tool might not be recognized as a can opener. Just guessing.

Back in my younger days I opened dozens and dozens of those big (#10) cans with a SAK. It's slow but definitely works.

I've opened big cans with my P38..hurts my thumb, but it gets it done

I was going to say, who goes to a desert island with all of those knives and doesn't have a P-38 on their keyring? In hindsight the P-38 on my keyring, which has been there probably close to 20 years now, was my first multitool!

All medium sized and up SAK's have a can opener. But even if it didn't, it still would have been much easier to have just used the SAK's main blade to cut it open. I've opened countless cans that way, when needed. Sounds like he's a "city boy".

Regards
