top -- Kaki (aunt) oversees the serving of dinner, Sherpa style, and it is generally a madhouse of confusion, cooperation, directions and hope. Kaki has invited about 30 people to this welcome home party for Uncle Bill and Yangdu and getting them all supplied with drinks and food is not an easy task.

bottom -- Kaki's daughter keeps Uncle Bill's glass full!

Khukuri FAQ

The photo shows a European-style dining table around which conventional chairs are plced. Yet, the people are sitting on the floor, Nepali-stylle, while eating. So, Uncle Bill, who are the table and chairs for?

Is there a lot of conversations going on during a Nepali meal?

In comparing noise levels (due to conversation) at various restruants (ignoring loud background music) I find the Chinese seem to be the loadest then Germans, Indians, and English.

General scenario:

Dinner usually starts out quiet -- people eating. As they fill up conversation gets going. By the time meal is finished conversation is too loud and just too much!

Khukuri FAQ

Beer, whiskey, tea. Dal Bhat, chicken tarkari, some fried fish and pickled vegetables. Plenty for everybody. Too much, in fact, but that is Sherpa style.
