After the success of the last kits - I plan on adding this to my line.

These are two prototype Diomedes Industries Prometheus Deluxe Kits.

These kits are jammed full of what you would need to have fire in an emergency situation.

It comes in three parts - 12 oz storage tin - smaller PSK style tinder box kit, and 12 ounce Flame Starter.

The smaller kit comes in an Altoids tin with:

1) A handled firesteel from www.firesteel.com . This drops serious sparks on your tinder.
2) A 6 foot roll of Jute Twine (this catches sparks from the firesteel or charcloth)
3) A roll of charcloth (hand made in my back yard from pure 100 percent cotton). A single spark will cause this to smolder and can be blown into flame. You only need a little bit
4) Three sticks of fat wood. Once the jute is burning, add a few sticks of fat wood for a long flame. If everything in your kit gets wet - shave this stuff very thin and spark it with your firesteel. It will take.
5) 5 chunks of bike inner tube (when you have your fatwood going - this will burn hot and long.
6) One nice chunk of Tinder Fungus, used as a fire starter (can catch a spark) or a coal extender (will smolder for a very long time). This is hand selected, dried, and cut to make sure you get the best parts of the fungus.

All of this is secured with a one inch ranger band (inner tube) which itself can be used for fire.

The 12 ounce storage kit comes in a tin box with a screw lid.

It has:

1) Three extra rolls of charcloth
2) Two extra bundles of jute twine - 3 ply, dry and extremely flammable.
3) Six more sticks of fatwood.
4) 10 more intertube rings.
5) 2 More chunks of Tinder Fungus

The Flame Starter:

The Flame Starter kit is a 12 ounce tin, filled with cedar bark, with an air passage cut into the side. You can use this kit to build your fire in, or you can use the tinder kit above alone. This works very well because it is safe to hold, it is filled with flammable material, and allows you to blow a stream of air UNDER the coal to speed combustion. Once combustion occurs, simply place this kit under your small tinder (procured from the area) and light them on fire. Once the fire is going - grab the Flame Starter by the wooden base - put the lid on to snuff the flame, and it is ready to use again. Leave the charcoals of cedar bark inside, they will catch more readily next time. When you find combustible materials in the field, simply add more!

Here is how to use the tinder kit alone:

1) Untwist some jute twine and buff it.
2) Cut a few curls of fatwood and pile them up.
3) Get out your intertube and a single section of charcloth.

4) Spark your firesteel onto you charcloth. This was one strike and I had an ember going.

5) Pile the jute twine on to the charcloth and blow it into flame.

6) Add the pile of fatwood shavings.

7) Add your intertube (if needed) to extend your flame.

This test pile used very little of the Tinder Kits resources and burned for over five minutes.

Not shown here is the tinder fungus. This can simply be crumbled or shaved and added to the jute twine. This is more of a smoldering item that can be blown into flame. It really is amazing stuff.

Here is the Flame Starter in action:

Here is a coal made from a bow drill fire placed inside. This could be Tinder Fungus, or charcloth once sparked.

Here it is with a little tinder placed on top and blown into flame:

After I added a few shavings from a dry standing dead tree - it looks like this:

If you can't make a fire from that - man - you may need to bring Prometheus himself!

Here is what it looks like all buttoned up:

The actual production version of this kit will have blank tins (no more Altoids - but the same size) a 16 ounce storage tin (to store more refills!) and a 2 ounce flame starter (this one will fit easily in your pack and works just as well!)

40 dollars for the deluxe kit and 30 dollars without the Flame Starter.

What do you think?
