Wow!!! What can I say about this Blade Show?
"Incredible" is somehow inadequate.
On a multitude of levels this was an amazing event. Wonderful knives, great folks, (friends old and new, makers as well as collectors)lots of laughs and too much booze.
For myself, the time I got to spend with old friends like our own Gus Kalanzis ( with good friend Sava Damlovac) and Rob Simonich (and a whole bunch more like Kit and Darrel and Tim)was only enhanced by getting to spend some time eating drinking and merrymaking with the likes of Al Dippold, Bud Nealy, Howard Clark, R.B. Johnson, and a bunch of other "miscreants". (You guys know who you are if you're reading this.
)
Anyway, on to the knives I was fortunate enough to bring home. (Forgive the lack of better pictures, but I wanted to get something up on the forums to share.)
"Maximum Distortion" by Al Dippold. Incredible mosaic damascus by one of the masters of the genre. Stunning black lip pearl scales. File worked spine, back spacer, liner lock and screws. Green tourmaline cabochon in thumb stud. There's a LOT going on here. Really too much for words. (What else would you expect from Al?)
Murray Carter, M.S.: 3.5" Blade of Damascus/San Mai (Hitachi White #2 Core; 1084/1020, Mild Steel Outer). Fossilized Siberian mastodon ivory scales. Leather pouch sheath. Created by Murray with the intention of submitting it as one of his test knives at the 2001 Blade Show where Murray successfully received his Master Smith rating.
Scagel style spear point by Master Smith P.J. Tomes featuring stacked leather and crown stag. 4.75" blade of forged 52100. Nickel silver guard and wire wrap in handle. Wonderful horizontal leather sheath by maker. Extremely clean work throughout.
Anyway, that gives you a taste of what my experience was like.
I came home somewhat poorer in dollars but much richer for the experience.
