The books are not closed forever, but you need to be one the lookout to get on them when they do open as they fill up very fast. For many of us by the time we here his books have opened they are filled. It is the same with many custom makers. I am Kirby Lamberts books, but so are many other people as he lets his books and waits go beyond 2 yrs. Many makers have a certain wait time or number of sign ups they do not like to exceed when they open their books. I am a fan of getting on books and do not mind waiting as it gives me time to save up and/or spaces out my payments for custom knives. (Buying a custom knife is like buying a 1911 it seems, costs about the same and they become more expensive when you go up in quality or extra add ons.)
