As a knife collector this last week was a good one; altogether I recieved 10 different knives in the mail. Of those knives, most of which I am very happy with, one that truly stood out was the Dirk Pinkerton Custom Variable Claw Reverse Tanto XL Knife (quite a mouthful).

Specifications:
Overall Length: 6.5"
Blade Length: 3"
Blade Thickness: .25"
Blade Steel: D2 Tool Steel
Ring Hole: 1.05"
Weight: 3.8 oz. w/o sheath

I was initially surprised by how thick this knife is. It appears to be inspired by the designs of Fred Perrin but I find it superior to my Boker Perrin La Griffe. The fit and finish is superb, the grind lines are perfect and the attention to detail is impressive. Unlike the La Griffe there are numerous ways to hold this blade.

The knife is described as being for self defense/tactical use. That is definitely the case as it would have little utility as a day to day cutter. I do think it would excel in its intended use offering better reach than most knives offered in this style.

The Variable Claw comes with a pleasingly thin and lightweight kydex sheath. Unlike similar Cold Steel designs this sheath is practical and allows easy acces to the knife inside. I do wish the sheath possessed a metal clip in the style TOPS offers for some of their blades.

My claw is composed of D2 steel, I don't feel a non-stainless metal is the best choice for a skeletonized naked blade likely to spend a lot of time in contact with the human body (sweat). Please note that I did not buy my Claw from Dirk Pinkerton's site. I was impatient and wanted it sooner rather than later, the current version is offered in S30V.

Overall the Claw is a winner. I liked it so much that I was immediately insipired to order Pinkerton's Variable Broadhead and am considering other knives in his catalog.

You can post pics by uploading them to a service such as Photobucket. Then you put the IMG code that they provide for each pic into your post.

Not my cup of tea, but it does sound like a well made and worthwhile knife.

Thanks Knarfeng,

Pictures of the knife covered in my fingerprints and with too strong a flash added. :D

Note - the blade has a smooth satin finish.
