I metal detect . Today I found a civil war Union Navy button in fantastic condition. Im putting it in the outdoor forum here, hope nobody minds. I do use a knife, SAK One Handed Treker or a Hiker when dirt fishing. The saw blades cut roots for me.

What makes this an unusual find is I did not find it at a camp or battlesite. I was just randomly searching a wooded area here in Northeast Missouri.

Yeah, you just never know what someone once had and then lost in some unexpected place. Think of all the ways a Navy button could get to MO and you wonder if it was dropped during the period of the Civil War or how much later it was lost. Thanks for sharing the photo and story, much more interesting than the usual bottle caps and chunks of ferrous whatevers that are probably all over creation.

The history of this place was it was logged in the 18th century.Shipped down the Mississippi to St Louis then out west. Dodge City Kansas was built out of logs from these hills. There are still old roads in the woods here. I have found a lot of old stuff among these trees. Coins, jewelry and relics like this one. I even have a Hawking whistle which dates back to colonial times. That is even rarer because there was no one but Indians here during those days.

That's a really cool find.
I've always wanted to try metal detecting on the beaches here.

Great find! The condition looks amazing. Congrats!

Ive been finding some really old relics, and coins. Found my first 1700s coin recently. I go in the woods, just walking and looking. Looking for old trails, roads.., but I love to find high , flat , dry spots along creeks and ridges. That is where the camping took place.

Just took a soft toothbrush , water and very gently scrubbed it. Its brass with gold plate and it just wasnt corroded.

great hobby I love metal detecting/dirt fishing also.but always carry a large bowie plus dirt fishing special bladed tool.
happy fishing
