Dirttime question and opinions

i have heard nothing but great things about the Dirttime gathering's... i have yet to make any of them... there is a little write up on the last DT gathering, in the new Wilderness Way magazine...

I wouldn't call Dirt Time a school. More of a gathering with instructors. Not that I've gone, just from what I've seen over at Hoods Woods. I'm considering going this year, but I have to put alot of thought into it as I would like to see other things in the area of Wyoming & South Dakota. This means I would have to take 2 weeks off from work, plus they say it's first come first serve which kinda sucks. I could pay for it now, but I have alot of difficulty trying to plan this far ahead for such a trip. (I'm just weird that way.)

Check out Hoods Woods forum. They have threads in both the Rendezvous for you & the Photo forums.

For the price of the event (not a school) the amount of knowledge at a dirttime gathering is uncanny. I have been to DT08 and DT09 and will be in Wyoming next year. The instructors that they line up are excellent, heck you learn crap standing in the food line socializing. There is usually 3-4 various classes per day and they can be on almost any subject from Ultra light hiking and gear to primitive traps made with nothing but rocks and twigs. The instructor'ss time is all donated and basically the price covers the facilities and 3 meals (good meals) a day. They have done prize giveaways and some of the prizes pay for the event. This year I won a 4 day defensive handgun course and my wife got $150 Tops knife.

I highly recommend attending the event. I know seats are almost full for Wyoming so if your thinking about attending hit up Alan Halcon on the dirttime forums.

IH8U, thanks, that was the kind of info I was looking for. I just paid off my new Brian Andrews custom. Looks like I better scrounge 250 up real quick before there full.

I know DWK2 went this year and he loved it. I just couldnt make it with my work. If you got the time the money should be well spend.. I would say got for it and have fun.

i have been to them, and to the proto-gatherings in the years before.

we sponsor the DirtTimes with our hawks, and will be tossing some of our new ECO hawks in next year along with some Mark V hawks, i reckon.

the days are full of classes. there are all sorts of extra folks there who are not only great to meet, but have even more to share with. the instructors always love to hang out with everyone and expound on the lessons. i am understating how good it is.

you show up a stranger, but you leave as family.

the Trade Blanket alone is worth going to the event usually. i always score alot of goodies.

i am excited that it will be in Wyoming this year, and i know the ranch owner where it and the following week's professional pistolcraft instruction will be.

all that, and the food is damn good.

and fine women.

- on second thought - don't go, i don't want to share the good food and fine women.... :D:thumbup:

(see ya there, brethren.)

I attended the most recent DT. I thought that it offered a tremendous amount of value for the cost. I particularly liked the variety of approaches to survival issues: They ranged from a totally minimalist approach to redneck practical.

One of my favorite classes was the fire drill. They had a bunch of excellent instructors and assistants who really walked each student through the process.

I also liked the ultralight backpacking session. A few new ideas and outlooks there.

The traps and snares class was very helpful. The instructor trapped (and released) several birds during the course of the morning. His stuff really worked.

Chris Nyerges is great on edible plants. I've heard him speak before and would like to hear him again.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the communications class. Didn't think I'd find it all that entertaining but it was one of my favorites.

I understand that they vary the curriculum each year so Wyoming may be a little different. But I trust these guys to put together a worthwhile course.

[And thanks again to Vec for being one of the sponsors and chatting with me about hawks.]

[I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed the talk by one of the sponsors who runs a survival kits business (and authored a book on the subject). He had a tremendous assortment of good ideas and equipment. Very helpful!]

DWK2 and Vector001, thanks for adding the info. Sounds like a good time, and I sent off an e mail to make sure its not full. I already got the time off of work, so I hope to see you guys there.

my pleasure, brother.

- brother DWK2 is a humble and knowledgeable gentleman and i wished that i could've spent more time yakking with him.

the big joke is, the folks who are organizing these things are professional organizers of the highest order - lots of folks that put on events are, that's no big deal - what is different about them is that they absolutely LOVE the self-reliance stuff as a lifestyle, and are experts in the field, and the structure of the program, and the village atmosphere that is palpable at these things, shows it.

i don't like pumping things up beyond their value, so believe me when i say that these events are worth much more than you could imagine, and definitely more than you pay for.

if folks doubt it - great, i hope they stay home and don't spoil the fun for the rest of us - hehehe! :D:thumbup:

i want to attend in the worst way.

Thanks gang for supporting DT. We feel we offer tremendous value for the money from some of the most experienced folks in the biz.

Paul Campbell, Author of "Survival Skills of Native California"
John McCann, Author of "Build the perfect Survival Kit"
Christopher Nyerges, author of 10 books and over 3000 published articles
Dude McLean, Field Editor for "Wilderness Way" magazine
Dave Canterbury, currently shooting with Discovery a survival show
Jack Spirko, hosts the biggest survival show on the internet "thesurvivalpodcast.com"

This is just a sampling of who will be teaching. Other schools will charge you 3 and 4 times the amount and only give you one instructor.

This year, we will also have Jon and Geri Mcpherson, authors "Naked into the Wilderness"
Rod Garcia, Designer maker of the Skookum Bush Tool. The knife Mors Kochanski says is about a perfect bush knife as one can get.

Our sponsors are top notch and last year we gave away over 10,000 dollars worth of goods and services.

We also have folks set up there mini stores with all kinds of valuable products for sale.

This year, immediately after DT, weekend of 19-20, two of our attendees are going to do a defensive handgun course and a lowlight course, open to only 25 people. It has nothing to do with DT, but it is a testament to the quality of folks we attract.

If you guys want more info, visit our site at dirttime.com. We have over a hundred people already registered. And, we will sell out.

If ya have any questions please ask.

Alan

Halcon, is it possible to give half the money now to hold a spot, and pay the rest out of another paycheck?

I listen to spirko..... :D

I have a couple local friends I've done construction work with show hang with the DT crowd and really like it- both are tracker school alumni, too. It sure looks like a lot of fun, I'd make it worth my time (and will, once next may is over)
