I've got a Sog SidewinderII that has grime and a little rust inside it. I would like to dissassemble it to clean it but don't know how. How do you dissassemble a folder? Do I just drill out the pins and replace? They almost appear to be round brass nuts threaded onto a steel pin- it looks like the protruding steel pin was cut off flush with the top of the nut-but I cant tell. It should be clear that I am not up on this stuff. And yes, I reallize that it's alot better to not allow a knife to get in this state to begin with.
Thanks!

Hi....

Your looking for a Whole world of Hurt if you start "drilling out pins" on a folder...

Go get yourself a can of WD40 and a toothbrush and start scrubbing...

Tearing apart a folder isn't what you want to do..

Clean it out the best you can, you'll be amazed what a little WD will do and a little light oil once its clean..

Eric...

After the WD-40, clean out the hard to reach spots with a clean toothbrush (well, one without WD-40 on it). If you have a can of compressed air, blow it into the little hole places. You should do this because WD-40 becomes grimy when dust sticks to it, if you just leave it in there, the mechanism will get sticky. I learned this the hard way on one of my multitools.

After the WD-40, you might try some brake cleaner. (don't get it on anything plastic) It would probably get the rest of the stuff off and it evaporates fast and dries clean. After that, try using some q-tips or wadded up kleenex down in there to get the gunk out. Once it's pretty clean, oil it up with whatever you like and it should be a lot better.

Whatever you do - DON'T TAKE IT APART!!!! If it's anything like my sog folders, it wasn't meant to be disassembled. Like Normark said, if you start drilling pins out & stuff, you will just have a pile of junk when you're through. Just clean 'er up and oil 'er up.

Hello,

Are you the same ChrisW that wrote the program CS-Tal ?
