I have a distance vision problem. How would one go about becomming a custom knife maker? Is there a school that a person could attend etc...

I am surprised no one has posted a reply, so heres my 2 cents worth....first i think you should get the books: David Boye "Knifemakeing you can do it" or something like that and the Loveless Book "How to Make Knives" and read them both a bunch of times....then get the Loveless video....and watch it a bunch of times, then if you still want to make knives, think about buying a drill press, buffer, and 2x72" belt sander, variable speed is preferred. I dont know what distance impaired vision problem you have, but if you can see at 18" you should have no problem. And yes, there are some schools, but i would get those books and the video and study them hard first...then if you want to go to some seminars you will be way ahead of the game.

King,

What Mr. Mayo said above about covers it. The only thing I would add is to remember if you need help here is the place to get it. You can learn endless amounts in this forum by tapping the brains of some of the pro's that converge here. Just by reading the different posts you will learn. Believe me, I have learned much from this forum it is a great place to spend some free time when a guy has it.

I have a blind friend who has built several kit knives that have turned out well. He used a drill press, bandsaw, belt sander and hard work. I would suggest doing what many of us have done and start with a kit.

All I can say is don't let your disability stand in your way I have a good friend that only has one hand and he makes great knives
he studied under Keith Murr out of arkansas
and does several different styles of knives
his name is Michael Martin
