Disappearing Pictures

The pictures in this thread (pix hosted on Bladeforums) seem to be sometimes visible and sometimes not, or maybe they're visible to some people and not to others:

This knife came back to the states from Kyoto, Japan sometime prior to 1953. My father brought it back after WWII when he was stationed there during Korea as a 2nd Lieutenant. It was in his desk drawer at home and I was always told that it was a letter opener. It has a wooden scabbard, brass ferrule and no visible markings. I'm really not comfortable with disassembly so is there anything that can be determined about it's purpose from these photos. Thank you.

The first time I viewed this thread, no pics, second time pics, this morning no pics.
