Disappointed with SOG Flash

I went ahead and bought a SOG Flash 1. It looked so good in the catalog and it had many of the features that I thought would make it a superior EDC.
It was truly disappointing! The Flash felt like a toy, not a tool. It is VERY difficult to open. It has no liner, the blade is thin and I'm afraid to use it for fear that it will snap like kindling. The whole thing feels flimsy. What a mistake!

I was looking for a 2-1/2" to 3" blade in a thin lightweight profile that hides itself in the pocket. I am currently in love with the mini-Griptilian but I must continue my quest for the ideal EDC......

Might I suggest the Benchmade 705? It is pretty invisible in the pocket while really being a handful of knife. If the 705 isn't classy enough, look at the Umfaan. Even though it is alittle expensive, it sounds like it would fulfill most of your requirements.

Good luck, but I for one, think you already have the ideal edc.

As far as SOG knives in general go, I hope their Sculptura is more substantial, I am about to grab one.

the flash 1's are dissapointing knives indeed. i returned mine for the EXACT same reasons you mentioned. got a griptilian instead and i am totally satisfied.

I have yet to see a better EDC knife than the mini-Griptilian for less than double it's price. If you care exclusively about using rather than materials then I doubt you will find a better one at any price.

I just looked at the price of the Umfaan. Wow! I'm sure that Chris Reeve makes great tools, but the price of the Umfaan is out of my range.
Maybe I can manage the BM705. How thick is the 705? Is it thicker than a Spydie Delica?

If your EDC specs include it being an assisted opener may I suggest the Kershaw Leek PE. I looked at the Flash I and II at a recent gun show and I am of the opinion that the Leek is a better knife (again that is just my opinion). The Leek has the thin profile for which you are looking plus it locks up well and the blade appears to be sufficiently thick for most EDC uses.

quest for the perfect edc? after many, many, many, many, many, many , many (ect. ect. ect.) the closest Ive found so far is the kershaw avalanche, and the camillus edc (in 154cm).

The Kershaw Avalanche is one of the most underrated knives around. This is a nice piece of cutlery that is built extremely well and built to last. I don't have one currently, but based on the one I had a couple years ago, it is worth getting another!

Good call on the Leek Trane. My son picked up a rainbow Leek at SMKW last week and it is a nice 'un!

Good Evening All-

WorkForALiving, the Benchmade 705 is a slick little knife. Nice materials make for an "everyday carry" (EDC) that you'll be proud to own. Mine shares EDC duty with an older Mini-AFCK in ATS34.

As far as thickness compared to a Delica, the dual steel liners with G-10 layered over them makes it thicker than a Zytel-bodied knife. The blade itself is .10" stock of 154CM steel. Mine came from the factory razor-sharp and is fairly sheeple-friendly for office environments.

If you are not accustomed to thumbstuds, use caution your first couple of times so that you don't slide your thumb right onto the blade. I can now toggle between opening hole and thumbstuds fairly easily.

Hope that helps you with your decision.

I got the op to handle one recently, thinking that it would be great. I was afraid it would break. everything seemed to flex abd move. Bummer, I expected more from it.

I have a Flash II and I disliked it at first, but it has grown on me. It is my EDC. The lock takes some getting used to and the design is lack-luster, but it gets the job done and it can be a very effective self-defence/random-task knife. SOG has much better knives in thier inventory than the Flash. You should have gotten the Pentagon II, IMHO the knife for the buck.

I too have a Flash 1 and was very disappointed. Flimsy was the first word that came to mind. It felt like it would fold in half if any pressure were applied to it. The blade lockup was horrible. It seemed like a good idea at the time...
