Disappointing Knife that is now a FAVORITE

How many of you have bought a knife, sight unseen to be very disappointed when you got it in? Then after you played with it, cleaned it, used it, carried it and got to know it, the disappointing little knife became your most treasured possession.

Mine was the Masters of Defense Hornet. I bought the thing without every having seen one in person. The pictures make it look much larger than it really is. In fact this knife is down right tiny. To me anyway.

After my initial shock at the cost of the knife and the tiny little footprint it had, I began to play with it. Finding the little fella was solid as a chunk of granite. The hornet was easy on the pocket and dang handy too boot. I now carry this knife more than any other. She is beginning to show signs of wear, but heck that just adds character.

So my little tiny disappointment has turned into my little tiny treasure.

Anyone else have a disappointment that has turned to a treasure?

God Bless our Troops, their families and America. May the good Lord grant each of us His most Holy Grace and Love as we celebrate a most wonderful and special Gift.

Yes...I once traded for a Kershaw Trooper, and when I received it, it was alot smaller than I had expected. I ended-up trading it for alot more value than I gave for it. (I know this isn't what you ment, but it's the best I can muster on short notice.:D.).

Excellent question...these types of things happen all the time (though it is preferred to when you love the knife upon receipt only to end up hating it after living with it...an even more common experience :( ).

Although this example is not exactly the same as your situation, it is similar...For years I have thought that the Al Mar (and later REKAT) Warrior was the one of the ugliest knives ever made...I HATED it...but I have recently purchased some knife-fighting videos with Kelly Worden and James Keating where they go on and on about the design and they demonstrate how it is used...now I REALLY want one but alas they have been discontinued.

I got my first Spyderco Dragonfly as a gift for my son about 6 years ago. He didn't seem thrilled by it so I gave him a different knife and took the Dragonfly. I used it as my Flying knife and carried it whenever I flew and began to carry it whenever I wore Dockers. I began to really appreciate how great if fit in the hand and how great it cuts. I have 5 of them now and this is one of my favorite knives I have ever had.

Bingo Judge! We share the same feelings for our Hornets. I was somewhat turned off to the bead blasted blade also. Now I find the hornet to be one of my favorites along with one of my BM's.:)

Hmm, thought provoking. I remember Buzzbaits famous Spyderco Military review which expresses just this sentiment and I had a similiar 'recoil and put it back on the counter' experience with the Millie, which is now my favourite knife.

I also thought that the Becker C/U 7 was clunky and ugly when I first got it. It was only after using it for a few weeks that it grew on me.

My Spyderco JD Smith didn't seem like much when I got it, I am not sure if I would say I was disappointed at first or not as I got an AWESOME deal on two of them. But it definatly didn't get me very excited. Here I am a year later with many customs and higher end knives and I am thinking that JD Smith is probably among the best damned EDCs I own. I end up breaking it out for a week or two here and there as I now love every single thing about that knife

The day I realized how much I REALLY liked the knife, I made alittle post ;)

I couldn't say it's my greatest possession but Spyderco's Spydercard went from "paperweight" to "back up" EDC a few months ago. I own several "credit card" knives and the Spydercard beat them all out. It's tucked into my wallet and goes everywhere with me. Took some time getting used to the extra weight but, now I don't notice it at all. Maybe one of these days, Spyderco will make one with a thinner blade and FRN handles. Some kind of redesign to eliminate weight. I'd be first in line, sight unseen, to pick one up.

samme here with a Spyderco Fred Perrin! When I got it I tough:" it's a kitchen knife!". and actualy started to use it as kitchen knife! Then I found out that it was a great working knife with a good sheath! very usable!

Both my Benchmade TSEK and Mini-TSEK...

On the fullsize, I had one for a couple of weeks, and never warmed up to it. There was nothing wrong with it, but appreication of a design can be very subjective. I traded it off, and about 3 months later wished I had not. Purchased a new one, and it is now my primary work knife. I often recommend it as a very good "bang-for-the-buck" folder.

Almost the same story with the Mini-TSEK. Thought I would get the first a little brother. Ordered one, and took an immediate dislike to it. Did not like the short handle, liner lock, thumb ridges on the spine. The Mini just did not give me enough sense that it was worth what I paid. Returned it in a couple of days, and swore I would never purchase another liner lock. A few months later I found a new-no-box one on eBay, for half the price of the first. I now like it so much, it is my EDC.

The large Griptilian was the one that I thought I would never use and would wind up in the knife roll. Now I have two large and three small Grips and I really like the way they handle and feel in my hand.

You just never know till you try something on and really use it. I have several knives that I purchased because of the rave reviews on the forums only to find that they weren't my cup of tea and in the knife roll they go only to be taken out periodically to be fondled.

Lone Wolf Harsey. When i first got it I was prepared that day to send it back. Not sure why, it just didn't seem to live up to its billing. After a day of playing with it though , tightening up the action a bit, and then gripping it I decided that it wasn't going anywhere. One of the best grips I ever felt on a knife! The action is now tight but still smooth and with the heavy blade it don't take a lot to get it out and into lockup. No blade play in any direction, an extremely tight lockup, and completely centered blade, were things I initially overlooked.......and these are things I usually look for first!! The saftey lock works flawlessly, much better than the version on the CRKT's I've had.
