disassembled Manix 2

The lanyard tube is pressed in and probably 'peened' a little to hold onto the scales. A complete tear down is probably not a good idea because you probably won't get the tube to go back into the G10 or carbon fiber. It isn't that hard to take apart though, you just have to rotate the scales on the tube instead of pulling them off from it.

Pay attention to the orientation of the bb cage because it is asymmetrical and one side goes up.

This should give you a good idea

The way I understand things, it works like this: If you damage the knife disassembling it, you void the warranty. If you take it apart and modify it, you void the warranty. Otherwise, no blood, no foul.

That's my understanding as well. Here is the wording from their website...

I know I have read that this is the case with Benchmade but I have not read this for Spyderco. Anyone have a link?

The only "verification" I have is from Charlynn herself via email comms. I bought a black Para from Poor Fish and the lock up on it was super tight. The compression lock would not even engage the blade. I sent it in at her request after a couple emails and she said the knife looked as if it were possibly disassembled, thus voiding any warranty. Could vary case by case though.

Isn't the warranty only void if the disassembly or modification leads to the failure? If you take the knife apart and drill the liners to reduce weight and the blade cracks, they should still cover it, correct?

I have read the taking apart voids the warranty claim quite a bit but never was able to find it on their website. Looks like you are allowed to take the knife apart as you should be.

It says damage caused by disassembly, ie if you wreck it when you pull it apart, but say if you pull it apart to clean it or whatever, then put it back together just fine and it breaks for whatever other reason, there's no reason why you shouldn't be covered.

My understanding is that Spyderco never replaces blades. That is to say, if a blade is defective they simply replace the knife. So I suspect they would do exactly that - replace the knife. You'd be on your own to drill the lners of the new one. But please keep in mind that I do not work for Spyderco, am not a lawyer, and have never sent back a knife with a blade which broke after I drilled the liners.
