I understand this voids the warranty but I need to take the blade off to clean it. It's an old D2, foliage green Millie and it looks like rust inside the pivot area. I was the original owner, it ended up in a friend's hands for about a couple years and just today, I traded him some gun parts to get it back. How do I go about taking it apart? Could I take the blade off without taking apart the scales? Do I take the blade off in the open or closed position? A step by step or any info would be appreciated.

i take my orange military apart all the time. i like being able to strip and clean/lube if necessary. anywho....

just take everythiny apart making sure to put them back in the same spot... screws back in the same holes, same side. i dont mess with the lanyard tube, but the scales can be "opened" for removal of the internal liners/lockbar. They will spin on the lanyard tube. dont be afraid :D also i went and purchased like a 6 dollar mini screwdriver kit that came with like 40 some bits(great investment!).

it was very frustrating the first time. take your time, if it seems obvious chances are it is.

if you have any questions feel free to email me at jwrickma@gmail.com and ill help you as much as i can

also! i checked on the warranty.

•Spyderco’s warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening

by that I interpret it as if you DAMAGE your knife from disassembly it is void from warranty. i didnt damage mine in any way so i assume my warranty is still intact.

Hey JSP, check out this thread I made on the Spyderco Forums http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42963

Edit: this is the important content of the thread above

The thought to show the process of putting the knife back together occurred after the orange with black blade swap was done.

Here are some pictures. Keep in mind these are newer militaries (one blade was 04-09 and the other 03-09) so the back spacer is now threaded. I remember on an older millie I had the plastic back spacer had two metal "tubes" you needed to place into the backspacer so the screws could grab.

Anyways here is all the parts of the knife

Next I like to place the liner into the handle then screw in the backspacer.

Next add the other "liner", screw "tube" and blade with washers.

Since the knife is held together with the lanyard hold just swing over the other scale on top of the blade and screw the sucker up.

Ahh, back to new

Here is the orange millie with black blade(and clip) which I think looks kick ass!

Hope this helped anyone who was uncertain on how to reassemble a military and how easy it really is.

I've taken apart 4 millies and did frame lock conversions..just take your time, be somewhat gentle with the body screws when taking apart and putting back together because they are prone to stripping also use blue loctite

Thanks guys. I'm not mechanically inclined. Just wondering if there was anything I should know in case there was any surprises. This is going to be my weekend project.
