If some type of disaster affected you (hurricane, fire, tornado, sink hole, theft, pissed off ex, what have you) and you lost all of your possessions, what knives would you purchase again immediately? Or if your answer is none of your current knives would be purchased again immediately, which knives would you buy to begin the fresh start? For the sake of this scenario "immediately" means within a month or maybe two.

If this was one of those "space aliens take all your knives but one and don't let you buy any more" threads my choice would be different.
This somewhat echoes where I'm at per this question.

For the question as written, a Leatherman Wingman and a SAK to keep things versatile, reliable and inexpensive. If I felt I really needed a modern I'd add a Byrd Cara Cara 2.

For space aliens scenario I'd try very hard to find another Spyderco Urban in K390.

I would have other problems to worry about if I lost all of my possessions. Knives would be way, way down the priority list. At some point I would probably buy 3 inexpensive kitchen knives to allow for cooking, assuming I still had a place to live and cook, and perhaps a SAK. Clothing, food, water, a shelter, a place to sleep, bathroom, a way to get to my job, all come way before things like knives.

If a total knife loosing disaster hit me (let's say a fire), the only knife I own that I would be replace immediately is a Victorinox SAK. Probably the Adventurer model that was just re-introduced with a liner lock. I could do quite nicely with just the SAK. Others would follow selectively down the road.

As JC57 said, a couple functional kitchen knives would also appear quickly from some place like Walmart.

Trying to keep it to just a few and in the most likely order of acquisition-

-Victorinox Swisstool CS- It would be ordered just as soon as I had somewhere one could be shipped to and I'd feel naked and frustrated until it arrived.

-Mora Companion, carbon steel- Super cheap and wonderfully useful, this would probably arrive in the same shipping box as the Swisstool because, for the price, why not?

- Cold Steel Master Hunter- I've had an old one for years and as a hunting/game processing knife, it's the one I keep coming back to.

-Victorinox Ranger- My most frequently carried pocket knife when not at work. Useful, inexpensive and nonthreatening to the general public.

-ZT 0909- My main one hand opening work EDC. This is assuming that I can find one now that it's been discontinued.

-Busse SARGE 7- Current favorite largish all around camp knife.

Most of my list isn't really all that sexy, but they're my current go-to's in their respective categories. It also assumes that my life after the disaster ends up looking quite a lot like my life did before it. Big changes in my life would likely affect my needs and priorities and change the order I'd get them at the least and quite possibly change some of the choices themselves.

A SAK. For the last 30+ years I've never not had a SAK around somewhere.

Then:
A PM2 and Manix2, my Klotzli SBG, a CRK Umnumzaan, a Hinderer fatty wharncliffe, and a G&G Hawk hawk-lock midtech (probably a MUDD). Not necessarily in that order and presuming I had the ready cash on hand. That's a lot of money for me to spend in a month on knives, even if it's not a post-disaster scenario.

My scenario and timeline were specifically picked. Disasters make you reassess, make more deliberate choices, and determine what is essential. The timeline of a month or two later is the critical juncture. At that time you are past the initial survival mode during the disaster and immediately following in the few days afterward. You are back to a semblance of normal life. You are back at work (for those in emergency services you are back to the point of actually being able to sleep and be there for your own self and loved ones instead of running nonstop to help others) and you/your children are back at school. The everyday minutia of life is ramping back up and your focus returns to getting your kid to soccer practice, making sure you're prepared for that business conference call, etc to whatever your normal everyday life looked like before. Yet you have challenges and problems that aren't fully back to "normal life" so that still plays a role in your decision making.

I also assume that "everything" was not lost, only knives. If it is everything, priorities shift immensely. That scenario would take years to recover from. I guess you would need to define possessions as that could mean... house, car(s), clothing, furniture, computers... everything.... clean slate just like you were born with.

A friend of mine lost everything in Storm Sandy a few years ago but he was most upset that his vinyl record collection got literally swept out to sea. :)

In that case, the only cutting tool I could probably afford to replace immediately is a favorite SAK. Everything else would take a long time to be replaced and would likely not be replaced at all. I honestly don't know what possession or possessions would bug me the most... certainly not knives.

"all posessions" was intentional. The scenario was meant to see what knives you would choose to purchase again (or if none you currently own, purchase for the first time) when your priorities are shifted immensely. You can add in the caveat of you have whatever insurance you currently do to "protect" yourself somewhat from the loss of these possessions. Of course, everything isn't going to be replaced immediately, if at all. So in this scenario, would you place a priority of having a knife a month or two after? If so, which one(s)? If not, why would you personally view a knife as non-essential?

My favorite knives are one-off customs so none of them :(

So you would not own any knives a month or two later? I'm assuming a kitchen knife would probably be among your new possessions a month or two later, but kitchen knives isn't really the focus of this thread. So no pocket knives at all? Or would you buy a knife to hold you over to complete tasks until you are potentially able to get one you really enjoy again?

In my current life's situation, after replacing the home, some basic items inside the home (kitchen stuff, food, bedding, clothing, and similar), a computer and software would be a huge priority for work (HUGE), my SAK Adventurer, truck, one TV and work related necessities. I had a computer die unexpectedly and it literally shut me down until replaced. Now I have several backups.... Knives aren't really high on the priority list other than a SAK which I depend on a great deal. Guns.... same thing. Might get one a few months down the road if I could afford it. I'm also assuming No Insurance. Basically... on your own.

Once I got around to the point of buying my first new knife after the total loss, I would probably pick up a peanut. Even when carrying something else, I usually have a peanut in my watch pocket and they have gotten more use than anything over the years.
