I'm going to buy/make a disc grinder and was wondering if anyone out there is using one from Tru-Grit or Uncle Al? What about other sources?

Thanks,

John

Easy to build, John. I recently built a horizontal variable speed grinder utilizing the beveled 9" disc sold by Rob Frink. The very small 3* bevel allows you to pass a longer blade across the disc without having it run into the ascending portion of the disc while you're grinding on the descending portion. I hooked it up direct to a 3/4 HP DC Leeson and a Minarik controller. Bolted the motor to a piece of 1" plywood and attached it to a Rigid adjustable tool stand. Works great. Building a vertical grinder is just as easy. Alternatively, purchasing a vertical grinder allows you to buy one with an adjustable angle table. This provides an ability to set an angle and precisely match angles when doing beveled bolster/handle matches. I have three disc grinders and use them all extensively. A very handy tool in a knifeshop. About the best prices for discs I've yet found is from Barbkat over on E-bay. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I think I can use Rob's disc on any machine I make/buy so that's not really an issue. Please let me know if I am wrong.

Fitzo, What about reverse? Is your grinder reversible?

Thanks,

John

Dang, John, I forgot that part, sorry. Yes, it is reversible, and that makes it really easy to grind bevels. You thus learn to grind by just flipping directions of both blade and wheel. Works great.

John, don't forget you can ask Rob to drill the mounting hole any size you want to fit your arbor shaft. I don't have variable speed or reverse but what I did was to hook it up to a 1 inch pulley on an old free washing machine motor rescued from the trash and then to a 6 inch pulley on the arbor to slow it down. Works great!
