I was taking apart an old 1" x 42" belt sander with an 8" disc on it to make a knife sharpener out of the belt sander portion. I use the disc all the time and was going to use it by itself. While I had it apart I looked at the back of the disc and saw that the weld was cracked about 3/4's of the way around. It kind of makes the old pucker factor go up. I could just see that disc coming apart and eating me and the shop up. I never thought to check the disc, but I will in the future. It's been in the shop for about ten years and has seen some hard use.

Nope no need for high speed Frisbees in the shop  :D  Glad you caught it before it did break completely.Just goes to prove that we all need to do a little machine maintanence (?) once in awhile.I am just as guilty, heck it worked fine when I shut it off yesterday can't figure out why it broke today ;)
I heard years ago that you should take the first hour in the shop to clean everything up from the late night before, this includes oiling machines and checking them for anyworn or broke parts, but me I can never get much time in the shop so that hour gets used making something.

Through a mindboggling combination of ignorance, alcohol, and grim determination I sucked a thin skinning knife right into the gap between the disk and the little platform! It shattered the aluminum disk and I was on the floor before the blade finished bouncing off the ceiling. :D Levi

Run over to Woodcraft and get a new platter. I think they are about $15.00.
That could have been a bad accident. I don't worry about them spinning off but when they break at a hinge and start flailing, it smarts.

You missed placed Yankee. If that sucker would of hit you in the head it would of made one hell of a mess. That suck would of broken into a million pieces. :D
