I was wondering what sorts of disclaimers you makers out there put on your knives / websites / catalogs. And Customers, enthusiasts, what sorts of thing do you consider appropriate ?

The usual "a knife is not a prybar" advice is standard fare, but I mean - How far do you go? Do you need to SPELL it out that sharp objects will cut you ... ? Or that a knife is NOT EDIBLE - DO NOT CONSUME ??? :barf:

Litigation is rife - there are fewer and fewer people these days who accept responsiblity for their actions and apply no control over their own destinies.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant ... it IS !! ;) :D Jason.

On one end of the box that my Benchmade 730 came in it reads; "HANDLE WITH CARE. Benchmade knives are packaged extremely sharp.".

Well, duh....

You FINALLY obtained a Benchmade?!

I'm proud of you , Dann!

:D

I think the biggest concern is at shows; most people who order a knife know what they're doing when they spend $300 plus for a knife. Alot of people at shows ( both gun and knife ) are just tire kickers, the show is something to do. Anyone who gets cut and tries to sue because the maker didnt warn them is an idiot and hopefully every court on Earth will side with the maker. Not sure if that helps :) - Charles

Yea but Charles not everyones knives are so sharp they cut you from 5 tables down!

I agree though, if you pick up a knife and cut yourself duh it's a knife.

My Benchmade 42, purchase new from a reputable dealer, had the same disclaimer on the box. After a couple "accidents" that, had it been as sharp as any of my Spydercos, would have left my hands bleeding, but barely dented the skin, wondered if a suit for false advertising was in order. And yes, it was suppose to be a live blade. Will say it was very easy to get put a good edge on it, and, most likely, it will hold that edge well, but "extremely sharp" out of the box - NOT!

I have found that with NIB benchmades, it's a mixed bag. My 42MC came shaving sharp, my 47, almost as sharp, but my 46-01 wasn't nearly as sharp as those. My BM Sentinel came hardly sharp at all, and the TSEK I purchased was fairly sharp, but I did sharpen it as soon as I got home.

Am sure you are right. Truthfully, may main point in that post was to show that even disclaimers may not save you from what any reasonable person would consider frivolous lawsuits. Guess we have to consider ourselves lucky though, the goverment hasn't stepped in to demand blade guards, triple fail safe locks and "childproof" opening devices on folders and "childproof" sheaths for fixed blades... at least not yet.
