Discoloration on Blade

When I was about 12 years old, I received a knife from my uncle. While on a camping trip, I accidentally dropped the knife in the bonfire, and by the time I was able to get it out, the top 3 inches of the blade turned gold, blue, and red.

I was going through my things last night for old times sake and found that old knife again. I was wondering...is there anything I can do to get rid of the discoloration on the blade?

God Bless,
Mike

Sand it off, the color however isn't the real problem, you basically annealed the tip.

Easy enough to remove the coloration on the tip, unfortunately that also means the steel's hardening and temper was tossed in the bucket in the discolored areas. More details on the knife (model, age, condition) would help, on the odd chance that it's a valuable blade, or at least worth enough to keep using, it may be worth sending to a knifemaker or heat treating service to have it rehardened.

It's an old Balisong/Butterfly knife that my uncle gave me. Back as a kid, I didn't know the differences between knives. All I knew was that my buddies all brought knives to the trip and I thought I should've brought mine too.

I'm from NJ and I don't know of too many knifemakers to send it to. I'm not sure of the model or the makeup of it. I just know it would look a lot nicer without the discoloration.

God Bless,
Mike
