Can anybody identify this discoloration on the grooves of my Hinderer XM-18? It is only showing up on two places. What do you think might have cause this? Is it a defective blade? I tried cleaning it with a soft cloth and a q tip, but with no success. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your picture's didn't work, but mine has this in the grooves of the flipper. Not too worried about it, doesn't effect performance

These guys already have it covered, but you might want to check out this for more Frequently Asked Questions and general information on XMs:

What percent of the xm-18s * are discolor like like that? I understad it doesn't affect performance but* Is there a way to lighten the color a touch.

All of the ones I've had, had discoloration in the jimping and grooves. As was said, it's a result of the heat treating, and since more often than not the finishing media can't reach inside the grooves, the color stays. It's normal, and happens on other knives as well.

I do believe the "Patina" resulting from the Manufacturing process adds a very cool look that personally, I like very much and I believe that many (if not all) will come to appreciate the look of distinction unique to that which is crafted rather than "punched out".
Use it - Enjoy it...... and revel in the look and feel of the Hinderer XM :)

They're a Good Bunch. Enjoy your Knife!

You took my words. It reads as if you don't count yourself among the "good ones" here...that's is so very far from the truth. It is I/me who falls as an outlier, not you!

As for discoloration in the jimping...it's a nice subtle contrast that I think is kinda cool. It's not on all the XMs like some blasted finishes, but is on the SW.

Anyone really troubled by the color in the jimping can sell me their unwanted XM(s) at 50% below MSRP...;)

I'll do 45%!! I'll have to check my bronze anodized when I get home. One of the things I like most about it is the inconsistencies and patina.
