Hi everyone, I purchased this knife a while ago and it just showed up a couple days ago. I hadn't even got to use it yet but when I looked at it on the counter this morning I noticed this discolouration on it.

What is it? I'm no bladesmith, and this is my first knife I really spent any significant amount of money on.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any help offered.

Do You want to remove it? It is just a patina (maybe rust can't tell) if it is a patina it helps against rust in the future

Looks like patina to me. Harmless. For a chef's knife, it will be a recurring issue. Though many patinas look quite pretty.

If you want to remove it, some metal polish, like for car wheels, will work.

I've use TurtleWax Premium All Metal Polish to remove patina from ZDP-189 blades without altering the factory finish. Others have reported good results with Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish.
