discontinuations for 2012?

The Gen-5 was discontinued this year, 2011, the last time it was in the catalog was 2010.

Who knows about 2012? If a knife is a popular one with the "buying public" it more than likely won't be discontinued. I know that the folding Kalinga became very popular here on the forum after it was discontined, but I'd bet if it was a popular "seller" before that it wouldn't have been.

I'm thinkin' lack of sales (popularity) is the main reason one is discontinued.;)

The little 306 Duet Clipper has disappeared from the Buck website listing. I don't know if that means it's discontinued or not.

It could have been an issue of production costs versus reasonable selling price. In which case even steady but not spectacular sales could result in discontinuation. But that's speculation in this case, as I'm not an insider.

I'm thinking that was the case with the folding Kalinga Pro.

They couldn't price it high enough to make a good profit because it was expensive to build and they just gave up on it.

I'm not an insider either......just a fairly good guesser.

Glad I stocked up on them before they got expensive.

Makes sense. The more they cost to make, the more they have to sell them for and that in turn limits the number of potential buyers. That's what I mean about being less popular, less sales.

Then, there are some that when you see them the first time, you say to yourself, "What were they thinking!". No one buys them and they die an early death.

Manufacturing costs and sales, verse profit margin, Is there any other reason for discontinuing a product?

Inducing collectibility. Ty Inc. (I know, I know) pioneered this with the beanie babies. They produced them for a while and then suddenly discontinued em with no warning. This made people want to buy more while they could, because they didn't know how long they'd be around.
