Wow! Just cruising e-Bay and saw that the Schrade line of discontinued one piece knives have shot up from what I recall their retail MSRP to have been.

The price point for these was $50 or so. Today I am seeing obviously used ones going for three times that and one of the "Extreme Survival" models offered at $500 described as new in box. Ouch! That is the one with tools in the handle. Wanted that as a Christmas gift for the grandson.

The Cheis Reeve one piece knives were always higher than the Schrade clones, but when they were dropped, they also skyrocketedf in price.

Back in the 2002, I bought a Camillus "Cuda Maxx" , at $125. This was a licensed production clone of the Darral Ralph Madd Maxx, a titanium frame locked folding dggr. The Darrel Ralph made semi-custom were priced over a grand. When Camillus went out of business, their Cuds Maxx trippled in price. Today they can be as much as $1,000 on eBay.

In each case, If I had only known, I'd have taken out a loan.

Asking a number is different from getting it. Everything on eBay is "rare" and "vintage".

But I get your point.

I am not sure buying knives or guns is a great investment. To get top dollar it probably should not be used and come with everything it sold with including box, paperwork etc. Hindsight is always 20/20, but knowing something will be a big hit in the future is tough.

One knife that I think will have future interest is the Spyderco Swayback. It was designed by Marcin Slyze and his Bowie was really well liked when it first came out. The swayback is discontinued and can be found ~$150. That is a great price for an incredible knife. Compare it to like a CRK and it can be had for under half of what one of those go for. You have to like the swayback design and that could hold it back. It is a very thin blade with a good steel and an exceptional cutter. We will see if there is interest in the future for this knife.

LOL. eBay is funny to watch. You can see CRK’s go directly from the Exchange to eBay in a span of days. Sometimes they wind up back here again. A little “rarer” and more vintage each time.

The phenomenon is not unique to knives. It is even worse in th asrtt . the artist hs got to die! There is an old movie where th artist faked his death to make his paintings more valuable but kept on painting anonymously.

While the CRK one-piece knives retailed for several hundred bucks ech, the Schrads were never more than $0-$80 or so at retail ZI think.

I recently bought a WW-II vintage pocket utility knife, aka "Demo", for nearly $80. Marbles offers a brand new replica of the same knife st around $10! . .The real-world price of that knife new. . . .and of coure I get why that is so.

Oddly, my 23 year old 2001 Chevy pickup is just an old truck. . . . and at age 73, I have become just an old man.
