Last I heard there was going to be a run of SpydeRenchs. Are they scrapping the whole idea or is the "last run" still gonna happen?

Great, now I'm never gonna find that PE Gunting... :(

Ah, well. At least I managed to get a Spyderhawk and Lum Chinese... :)

Thanks for putting it all together Carlos. Its never fun to be the bearer of bad news. On the bright side, there's a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon. Some of it is already shipping. The D'Allara seems to be a real brute of a folder.

I was really surprised to see the Lum Chinese and the FRN Cricket gone. Both were really practicle pieces. I supose tough times require tough decisions, just glad I didn't have to make the choice.

I can only console myself with the thought of all the great NEW models coming out in 2004. Some interesting radical designs, and some more traditional types as well, to please us old codgers :D

Hi Harry. We're woking on new tooling for the Rench and there are still pieces being produced with the old tooling. Delivery has been so poor and back orders so great that decided to stop promoting until we know for sure we can build them effectively and we've reduced the back order situation.

Hi Yog, it's not so much as "tough decisions" as it is making room for more new models. We can only carry so many models due to inventory and production costs. When the new models are planned, old ones must go. "Generally" the poorest sellers go first.

From mid 2003 to about spring 2004, we have more than 30 new models, improved models and variations. That's already in the plan. We have 5 more that are just entering the plan.

In the past 9 months,we have introduced: the SS Cricket, SpyderSaw, Assist II, Native III, Dodo, Scorpius, Assist I, Salt I and D'Allara Rescue. The Persian (a really beautiful Ed Schempp design) is just beginning to ship now, The Centofante III will be shipping early next month.

think about it this way....

they discontinue models, that means theyre being replaced with NEW and IMPROVED models

The Persian is beginning to ship now ???
Got to save my pennies for this one, it really does look like a beautiful piece :D

I fully understand and appreciate why models get discontinued, still there are some personal favorites in this year´s list. Thanks to Carlos, and Spyderco, with their timely anouncement I can decide on which models to stock up on. I trust we´ll get better stuff in return!

With the blue and red Salsas discontinued, does this mean no more production in Taiwan? I was under the impression that this was the only model produced there. Just curious.

The Spyderhawk just came out! Sheesh.

I am somewhat surprised at this myself. In fact, yesterday I bought my first Spyderco in about seven years (a Spyderhawk). I started my knife hobby with Spyderco about ten years ago, but moved on to more expensive brands like Benchmade, Microtech, etc. some time ago. Yesterday, though, I saw the Spyderhawk in the display case and it was exactly what I was looking for -- a good sized self defense folder with an agressive hawkbill blade, yet still light enough for every day carry. About the only knife out there to compare it with is the Microtech Hawk at between 5 and 6 times the price.

Oh well... If indeed it just came out before being discontinued, perhaps it will garner something of a "legendary" reputation, which I suppose could be kind of "cool" from my own selfish point of view...
