:) Yeah , fairly routine for me to mull over clicking the "buy" button for years .

I like for the price to settle down ...way, way down . And for longer term reviews to reveal any problems not evident in the "unboxing" .

Trying to sort out want from need and even might actually use (beyond a little initial playtime) .

I enjoy the "foreplay" of research and bargain hunting , sometimes more than the owning past a month or so .

But , inescapably arrives the dread day that a final commitment must be made , when it's probably as cheap as it's gonna get BNIB .

My current quandary is with the Cold Steel 4Max . Great knife I've wanted for a long time , but absolutely don't really need . Plus it's a good 2.5X my normal $100 soft limit . So , I'll be blowing my toy budget for awhile .

Complicating the issue ,CS just introduced the 4Max Scout . Probably near equivalent functionally at under $100 already . But definitely less classy "value" materials . o_O

I believe there's been more times I've regretted letting opportunity slide past , when I noticed the same model later going for classic / vintage / collector $$$$ . :( Thus beyond reach now .

So, I'm leaning towards BUY ! :cool::thumbsup:

I did the same thing with the ZT0180. It was the last ZT I was really wanting, and the design got the axe. I thought I was out of luck. They have been discontinued for a couple years.

I stopped in at Spark's shop a couple weeks ago and told him what kind of knife i was looking for. Something that would replicate the one that got away. He then pulls a NIB 0180 out from behind the counter. Couldn't hand him my credit card fast enough:D Funny how things work out.

I say buy. If it doesnt sink you financially, why not? We all have more knives than we NEED. Might as well get what we want while we still have breath in our lungs and can enjoy them.

If you're not blowing the budget for other family stuff then I'd say buy it, life is short and we only get one go on the ride.

Just do it. You can't take the money with you and it won't give you as much joy as owning that knife while you're here. Plus, once you buy, you can be done with all this mental anguish. No don't something else in life will come up to frustrate you in its place, something always does.

I have the 4max scout; for around 100.00 it is a Sherman tank. I used it in the woods slicing off branches like a machete, and its weight makes it really go through things. Its like a 4" fixed blade when using it. Its real solid. the weight is pretty noticeable in the pocket, and depending on the style of pants your wearing,it can be a little tough to carry. Also the pocket clip needs to be removed and slightly bent away from the handle. As it comes new, good luck trying to get it in or out of your pocket, its real real tight .I don't know why its like this but its an easy fix.AUS10 is a great steel too and the way CS heat treats, its plenty tough .To spend more than twice the price for the 20cv 4max is questionable, only because of its extreme weight. Its the heaviest folder ive ever carried, I have a ZT0200 had a crusader forge this is much heavier...

It's AUS10? DocJD DocJD forget the other one. Get this one!

:) Yes , the "Scout" version is definitely my backup plan . But there's no hurry for that one , in fact I would wait for the price drop . These will not be a limited production model like the original 4max .

I have been bidding at auction on several .

One was used and the only photos were of the BOX and zero info on condition except "used". Sold for almost $190 . I let that one pass . I stopped at $150 and was glad I did . Yeah , the box looked great , but ...:thumbsdown:

Yep, was watching that one too, but wasn't taking the risk and have a few other things going on. Most likely would have gone for well over $200 if there were pics of the knife itself and it was in good shape.

I waited forever on Spyderco’s
D’Allara 3 and glad I did. The price dropped by a third right after it was discontinued. That’s when I got mine. Now prices are back up to normal. You just never know what is going to happen.
