Discontinued Gerber values

Does anyone know of a good resource to determine the value of some NIB discontinued Gerber folders?

It would have to be reeeeeallly long discontinued to have a lot of collector value. As in, before Fiskars bought Gerber and when they were still making good knives.

Looking at ebay may be your best bet, assuming you can find the same or similar models listed.

When did that happen? I just need to assign a value to these things for insurance purposes (long story) and be able to provide some kind of cite for the quote. I haven't been able to find any of them on ebay or the classifieds here.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you talking about plastic handled knives, or the older wooden handled folders?

These are plastic handled knives, small LSTs of various colors and blade configurations (plain, serrated, polished, matte, etc...). They're all 2 5/8" blades except for one Magnum with a 3 1/2" blade. There is also one rubber handled ATS-34 Gatormate with a 3 1/4" blade.

No easy way to say it, but your knives have very little value. They are not old, nor are the collectible. Gerber was never known for their folders, and there is very little demand for them. Even wood slabbed folders from decades ago don't sell for more than $8-$10.

Okie doke. Thanks. Frickin insurance companies. This is all for loss contents inventory valuation. They should just trust me when I say that they were worth $100 each. LOL

Ummmmm........... Gerber's original folders go for a fair amount ( in both walnut and plastic handled versions ), as do Paul and Rolox Gerbers of later manufacture.

Blanket statements like

are a bit misleading IMHO.

Whether they are HIGHLY collectible depends on a moment in time and a moment in someone's wallet

Just my 2 cents

Is there some source that I can review to provide some kind of quasi-reasonable cite to put the squeeze on the insurance company?

CWL,
That part of your quote above is very, very wrong. All of the pre-Fiskars Gerbers from the early 80's back to the 60's go for good money on ebay, especially if they are in excellent condition. Very good money with boxes and paperwork, especially the Folding Sportsman's Series knives with the wood inlaid brass handles. The most collectible are the FS2's and FS3's. If you are lucky enough to have a Vascowear FS2 (V-Steel) with box and paperwork, it could easily go for as much as $200 due to rarity. The 440C FS2's and FS3's will go for typically $45 to about $75 depending on who is bidding that day and condition. The Gerber Magnum Folders from that era go for even more. The Japanese collectors were paying huge money for all of them in the late 90's, especially in mint condition. I know because I was outbid on many by some Jap collectors back then and they would drive prices up sometimes to crazy levels.

As far as the LST's go, the valuable ones are the micarta handled ones which I belive are all pre-Fiskars. The plastic handled ones are pretty much worth what CWL quoted above on ebay and they turn up quite regular. Ona good day you might slightly more on ebay but not much more.

Insurance companies aren't stupid and unless you have solid documentation you will have a tough battle if you need to file a claim and collect what YOU think they are worth.

The good news is that most Gerber models, recent models anyway, are mass-produced in such large numbers they're very common in the secondary markets. Use a Completed Items search on eBay to see what similar models have actually sold for recently, not just asking prices or auctions that aren't completed yet.

The bad news, I'm afraid these models aren't particularly old nor collectable. In fact the Gerber LST and Magnum are still in production. They may not be the exact same variations as your knives, but the value is probably similar. For an insurance claim, I would submit the m.s.r.p. from the most similar model at the Gerber website. www.gerbergear.com

The ATS34 GatorMate might be a more difficult value to track down. I would guess about $50-$70. If you knew what store you purchased it from and could find an old catalog with the For Sale price...
