Discontinued models I may never have.

So a few years ago when I first found out about spyderco I remember the one that stood out to me that i loved was the dodo. So fast forward a couple years I got a job and finally want to buy my first spyderco I look for the dodo... to my dismay I learned it was discontinued when I was only 7 years old. Going forward a couple months I finally got my first spyderco( Delica 4 ss) and I found out balisongs are legal in my state so start the search with spyderco and to my disappointment the smallfly is discontinued. So last night looking at the list of discontinued spydercos I want so much but can't have I just weep.

Of all the ones I want none still haunt me more than the dodo.

Anyone else have that knife that's discontinued that you really want?

I've sought out and purchased almost all of the discontinued models I've desired but ultimately passed them on to others to either collect or use.
My one grail Spyderco that I've never owned is the Swiss made C22.
Unfortunately due to its grail-like price I probably never will, but that's alright, there are hundreds of others in that price range I want to play around with.

A big regret is that I never got a first run Starmate. While I have a C55GP, which is a very nice knife btw, it is bigger, heavier and just ain't the same. Model prolificacy and frequently discontinued versions are
my main gripe against Spyderco and BM; by the time I get ready to pull the trigger what I want is gone.

Swiss made C22 (I have 2 of the ZDP/CF), original PE Starmate and Homemaker. The first 2 I could probably pick up easily (costly though), the last one is more difficult. It isn't a real "must have" so I don't really stress it.

I've found most of the ones I want on the exchange or the e bay.

I lusted after a few discontinued oldies before:
- Original Starmate
- Micarta Jester
- Ti ATR
- C95 Manix
- Lum Tanto
- Temperance 1 PE and SE

Two oldies I was lucky to get are the SE Military and JD Smith SE in micatra.

You win some you lose some... Luckily the new models are in general built to much closer tolerances, have better quality, with better steels and locks. Once I realised that it was much easier to leave the oldies in the past.

I have a friend who has all the earlier models and after handling them some of the grails aren't that highly coveted any longer. I carry and use all my knives so if they don't feel right in hand they are removed from the wanted list ;)

Completely agree

The one Spyderco I regret not picking up when it went discontinued..this one has gotten rather pricey..

The only one I regret not buying is the foliage green G10 Delica. I am sick that I never bought one, but I kept thinking they would be around a lot longer.

The big brother I may never have...

the small one is excellent, though, and discontinued as well!

Being relatively new to the knife and EDC world, there are many, many Spydercos that I wish I could have picked up for what they originally sold for. But models come and go and time marches on. I figure if I really want something, I'll look and search and wheel and deal and sell and save...do what I have to do get it. But to me, living in...enjoying the present and looking forward to what's to coming is more beneficial than pining over something missed. We truly live in the "Golden Age of Gear"...there's so much awesome going on right now and in the pipeline. Don't miss out...again. :D

Yeah I wonder if they were to bring back some that fell short in the past with these new matching processes and higher standards if they would do better than they did.

Aside from 30+ variants of the C35 Q, no. Perhaps because I've always been willing to accept the fact I may have to pay a "late to the party" fee in order to acquire one. I've found that darn near all discontinued Spydercos show up from time to time on the Exchange here and, with the exception of balisongs and autos, quite a bit frequently on eBay. As for the Dodo, in addition to the original blue and black G-10 versions, there have been several Sprint Runs and there's always the possibility there will be another, or others, in the future.
