Discontinued models

I bought many Spyderco's but don't own too many. I keep loosing them, mostly at work. Friends "borrow" them or I drop them in the water.

What has been disappointing to me is many of the models I like have been discontinued. I had a large and small Jess Horn that was handy. The "old" Persian is one I especially liked, and I need an Aqua Salt for the boat. I've seen a few come up for sale on Ebay but they are too expensive. I wish Spyderco wouldn't stop production on their knives. There is room for all of them.

I want to say Spyderco are the best pocket knives I ever used, equal to my Case knives I "always " had in my jeans pocket. Also I wish they made one folder with a "fat" grip. It sure would help my 64 year old arthritic hands.

My favorite discontued are the "s" "r" "g" and salsa.the salsa handle will be perfect for you. Or the volloton.you can get the salsa at bento box

I'm sure most, if not all, of us have at least one model we dearly wish Spyderco would put back in production. However, with only rare exceptions, the only reason a model is dropped from the lineup is lack of sales. Inventory ties up capital, vendors expect to be paid whether or not the product they provide sells. All the models you mention were made in Japan, and Spyderco's Japanese makers have 1200 piece minimum orders. Not sure if any of us could afford to sponsor a run ourselves, I know I couldn't, but you might be to convince a dealer, distributor, or other party, to sponsor an Exclusive.

As for the other, not sure what you consider "thick". The list in this thread on Spyderco's forum shows a number of Spyderco models that are 7/16" thick and thicker. I'm 67, have some arthritis in my hands, and find the FRN Stretch, which is .457" thick, quite comfortable to use. Increasing thickness by adding overlays to one or both sides of the handle is also an option with some models.

There may be room for all of them in the water, but that doesn't mean there is room Spyderco's finances to continue production on models that don't sell well. The single biggest factor in the decision to discontinue a knife is sales volume, and production capacity figures in as well. Sometimes they have to stop making a model to free up production capacity to make something new. Remember, Spyderco is a small company. Case laid off more workers when times were rough than Spyderco has on the payroll.

Though it is a pretty specialized blade, the Assist has a big fat grip.

i have a pro grip model someone gave me and i flat ground it and finished serrating it with my spindle sander. its pretty nice now :) my biggest issue with discontinues is benchmade. every stinking knife i wanted to buy or order was discontinued,,, grr
