One thing I like about Spyderco is its ability to bring new knives to market. And I understand that it is thus necessary to cull other offerings. However, it just seems like lately it has been kicked up several notches. It is almost to a point where if I really like a knife design, I might hesitate to get it. Not because I don't think it will be good. Becuase, I know there are problems with anything man made on occasion. It would be disappointing to get one that does not see much carry/use for a while. later to start using it and have it need repair or replacement and not ave suitable parts/replacements on hand.

Maybe that is why I am more drawn to handmade knives lately. I love my Spydercos, but with those handmake knives, I know the maker can fab up something to always be able to fix a knife. Should that maker be unable too there are many other talented maers out there who can make a fix.

Sure you can have custom made replacement parts for a prodo, however, it gets to a point of diminishing returns when you look at the investment/cost of the service.

Of course customs cost significantly more.Certainly the increased price is proportionally more than the increased function of the knife. But there are a lot of things you are paying for in that price.

Anyhow, thanks for entertaining my long and winding thoughts on the subject. I am curious to hear what others have to say.

I look at it this way - Buck has the 110 and 112. Spyderco has the Endura and Delica.

Companies will always have their standards there, year after year.

In some cases, the folders morph into better designs. I hope this is the case with the Lil' Temp.

Too bad about the Perrin and Ronin. Although I sold/traded mine away in favor of other knives, they are still excellent designs. Very sorry and surprised to see the Gunting go. I've got 4 live ones and 2 trainers, and wouldn't mind picking up another if the price was right and it was a PE.

Oh man, I'm gonna have to get a Ronin before they go. I really like the look of it.

I have come to the conclusion that if I find a Spyderco that I really really like
(as opposed to really like or just like)--then I had better buy more than one. That way I don't have to worry. Too bad that there are other things that get in the way (you know, mortgage, food, college fund for the kids---trivial stuff like that). :D

To bad about the Maddox. It's the best knife for a one armed person made. Suprising that they couldn't market it into success.

So what about the Calypso Jr? Will it still be produced through 2005? I think I remember Sal saying something about them staying in production until the end of the year and then getting discontinued again. Anyone know?

It was really a sprint run. Remaining stock on hand is the end of the model I guess.

I realize that a lot has been culled, and that it seems as if the line-up for 2005 seems smaller than usual. Still, reading between the lines here and other forums, I'm thinking that we can look forward to quite a bit of surprises in 2005/2006: Salsa 2, Li'l Temp 2, Pikal Folder etc...

Personally, I'm a collector/user. When a current model is culled, I love to find a replacement model in the new line-up. To date, I could always find a satisfactory replacement, the Yojimbo being my latest replacement for the Li'l Temp and the Paramillie for my Chinese Folder.

Gunting & Gunting Trainer gone!!THAT SUCKS!!If they would have had the backing the DODO had ,it would be a diff. story.

I've got 3 Maddox in shipment to me. This type of knife needs targeted marketing to be successful. It's a shame, but then Sunbeam used to make a great toaster that automatically lowered and raised the bread. After a run of several decades, production stopped in the mid to late 90's. It's a shame when good, functional, solid designs fall out of production, but that's the world we live in.

At least, with Spyderco, when one good design disappears, we can be sure others are on the way.

Mike,
If you want one, better get it now!! I tried two dealers that were out and the third only had one left. Price was $75.99. I am glad I didn't wait another day or I would still be looking. Good luck.

The Spyderco Retail Outlet had the blue Salsas for some $43.95 and I ordered two of them for gifts.
