Well I first saw that the SCUBA/DEMO was discontined at Savson's. I checked SOG and yes its true:(. A shame but understandable I suppose, they probably didn't sell that great.
So today I check back at Savson's and it says that the SEAL 2000 is discontinued...holy cow:eek:. I'm shocked. But SOG's website has the "SEAL Knife" which looks exactly like the SEAL 2000. So what's going on here? Just a name change?

Recon Bowie is discontinued as well. I'm outta here. FUBAR.

The Recon Bowie and the Scuba/Demo are the namesake of the company. If SOG wants to remain a going concern they have to take that long road to China. I'm glad they at least had the class to take these two knives out of production first.

Okay, there is some mis information going on here. I don't know how Savson got this but the SEAL Knife / SEAL 2000 is not being discontinued. We are redesigning the knife but it will still be in the line for 2008.

Yes, the Recon Bowie and SCUBA/DEMO are being discontinued. We still have limited stock and I am sure that there are many still in the wild waiting to be purchased.

Reminds me of what happened to the original Ithaca Gun Company. They got away from their trustworthy Model 37 designed by John Browning and their beautiful double barrels and starting making all sorts of crap, like lever action, pine stock, single shot .22s just to confuse their bread and butter and the consumer. they tried to be something they weren't. They went out of business decades before IFTA. Bring in SOG with their glorified Mohican plastic tomahawks and glow in the dark folding knives. Go figure.

If I sound bitter it is for good reason. My favorite production knife company just dropped their ethics of which the company was founded. I've seen it coming. You want an SOG? Just go to Dicks Sporting Goods or Big 5 Sporting Goods. You will find them stocked with the Harley Davidson and Jeep knives.

Bummer, that's been on my list of things to buy "someday" for a few years now, just haven't scraped together the cash. At least I already have the recon.....

I just took another look at SOG's website...apparently the Tigershark doesn't exist anymore either. Discontinue the Field Pup, the Gov-Tac, hell, even throw out that greater-than-sliced-bread Team Leader but don't kill the knives that people swear by.

I don't know why SOG is doing this stuff. Can't say I agree with it, but then again, I don't know what overall sales of the discontinued knives are like or what overhead on them is. I do know this though. The Recon Bowie is the knife that brought me to SOG. I'm sad to see it go.

I wonder if the (New and Improved) Seal 2000 will still be made in Japan or Taiwan?

Taiwan most likely. In marketing theory, SOG can lower costs and sell for less by moving to Taiwan without sacrificing quality. I've be doing some thinking. The original Recon Bowie knives that were used in Southeast Asia actually got their blades "sanitized" from all over the Far East. Something the company should consider when marketing their products to maintain their original target group. SOG may still be able to keep their original target customers and still take on the entire market if they educate the consumer appropriately, maintain strict quality control, keep added value to their products (which isn't being achieved), and intertwine the spirit and secrecy of the original Study & Observation Group with SOG the company. They could, in essence, become the Skunk Works of Lockheed Martin in the tactical knife market.:) Hypothetically, of course.
