Discontinuing the Navigator Serrated version...

Why was the C62GS Navigator Serrated discontinued? It's such a great little knife! I'm really curious about this, and would appreciate it if somebody could explain.

Also, what knife replaced it?

Mine is plain edge. It is one of my favorite small knives. It would be my number one airline knife if I could just talk myself into flying more.

Discontinued, because not people thought like you and me, it didn't sell, and/or too much overlap with other products that do sell.

Pity- It's a fine knife- one of my favorites.

I don't have the G-10 version, but I know what you mean, I love my blue almite navigator in spyderedge. The look and feel of the almite is soooo smooth, and always attracts attention.

It is a great little knife, and it fits in the hand very well. I use it to open up all the boxes and packages that my other Spydies come in

discontinued? Perhaps the G10 version. These were discontinued in favor of the almite version.

I know the that blue almite Navigator (with slots) is available in both plain & serrated versions throughout 2001.

If you really have to have a G10 version with teeth, I know I've got a few laying around that I could give up to SFO. There are also probably some out there. We made quite a few of them.

Question about Blue Almite...just what exactly is Almite? Is it a kind of metal that's lightweight in property, or similar to stainless steel, or a plastic-type?

Also, does the Almite Navigator generally sell cheaper, lower or the same as the G-10 version?

Sal, I didn't understand your post when you mentioned "...that I could give up to SFO". Could you explain that please?

As for availability, I've checked Knifecenter, Knife Outlet, DiscountKnives, Skyland Cutlery, TopofTexasKnives, and others and have not found the Blue Almite version selling. Guess it's not being marketed heavily, as people seem to have the impression that the entire serrated line has been discontinued?

I would appreciate it if someone, and Sal, could answer the above questions(especially as to just what is Almite and pricing differences). Thanks!

Flood - Almite is the trade name for a high grade aluminum sheet, formed into and knife handle, and then "anodized" with a special process producing a tough colored handle material.

I don't imagine there would be much of a price difference. Each material offers its challenges. "Toughness and longevity", two desirable traits in a good handle material also make it tough to tutn into a handle.

SFO is the Spyderco Factory Outlet. The G10 serrated pieces that I was referring to are pieces that R&D (my department) could cycle to SFO to be available for sale.

The Navigator is one of those "unusual" pieces that very few dealers choose to stock. The general attitude is that "it is the same size as the CoPilot and serves the same market. No need to have two". That is one of the reasons for SFO.

(We try not to promote SFO on the Bladeforums Spyderco forum. We are not trying to compete with Bladeforums store. You should also know that SFO is normally full MSRP)

The Navigator is also a low volume piece so availability has been difficult. We have evolved this design for several years. It is the basis for the "Meerkat" design scheduled for 2001. The "Meerkat" design is planned for higher volume and lower MSRP.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch, Sal. I've already located two G-10 serrated Navigators, but I was so taken by the Almite model that I'm looking at other places to check it's availability. I already possess a G-10 Navigator plain, so I'm considering getting the Almite version instead if I find it. If anything, it would not only look great but would also allow me to differentiate between the two knives when closed.
