Hey everyone. This might be old news but I was checking out one of the new CRKT Ryan's and it had loose thumb studs. I unscrewed them and to my surprise it had a perefct hole in the blade, just like on a spyderco. The hole is a bit too small IMHO but I like the way it opens. Just thought I would point this out too anyone who is interested. Thanks. -Lev

I knew it! There had to be a sane reason for CRKT putting that huge-assed thumb stud on there (which looks lame as hell in my opinion...) I was thinking about it the other night and figured that the only reason for the stud to be that big is so that it can fill up the Spyderhole that belongs on any Ryan design.

Paul.

I just took the thumb studs out and comparing it to my Custom Ryan Model 4, the hole in the blade is the same size. Makes the knife look alot better IMO. Thanks for the tip!

Man, it's surprising how much better that thang looks now. See what a spydie hole can do!?!

Got it in and the knobs were off in no time flat.

This knife will be my first attempt at Satin finishing.

My brother bought the CRKT Ryan Model 7 for me today for my birthday and I was really impressed. It is a very good knife for the price. I also took off the ugly thumbstuds.
I like it alot better with out those.

John, Right after I took that picture, I went down to my basement, and attempted to satin finish the blade. Lets just say It's still a work in progress

mr44,
That was my first impression too. I wonder if they put the hole in the blade and had to re-do it to prevent lawsuits. It does make you think....And the stud is rotatable in the hole too. right?

Just picked up a Model 7 today as a replacement for an Ascent that I passed on to my younger brother. For $59 (cheaper off the net) this is one hell of a knife. I'm very pleased with the purchase. I wasn't so sure about the looks of the knife from pics that I've seen, but handling it in person was a different story. I played with the Point Guard as well but felt the Model 7 was more solid and had the nicer looks.

OK, how the HELL did you guys get the studs off?? The first one came off fine (with a little prodding by a pair of pliers), but the one on the "Ryan" logo side isn't going anywhere. There's a washer in the hole that the studs thread into... can't get the damn thing out. HELP!

*edit* never mind. Got it out with a screwdriver and a hammer. Everyone's right - MUCH better with just the spydie hole.

Looks better? to each his own, I suppose. I waited quite some time before buying any spyderco because the hole make the blade look ungainly. It looks like it is pregnant, waiting to give birth to that hole. (the Tim Wenger is the worst, IMO) Anyway. I was very nicely surprised at the overall design of the thing. Huge ridge and two finger grooves for excellent gripping. Many manufactures could learn a thing or two from this design. Even the Zytel is scaled very nicely. When I first picked it up, my reaction was "Is thing made out of G10?) And I really do like the ridges for gripablity.

Man! That's a fine looking piece (now) !

I always liked the design, except for the thumbstumps. Lickety-split, out they go!

I can't imagine getting any thumb purchase on those obese, smooth stumps, but the hole is the way to go. I just hope for CRKT's sake that this was unintentional, and not a backdoor infringement.
