We lost all TV reception after the big switch in this summer. Two sets of amplified rabbit ears and two DTV converter boxes and we still can't get squat.

Anyone have experience with dish TV. Anything to watch out for? Pros/Cons compared to Cable?

Thanks.

Well, no but we have had DirecTv [ another satellite system] for several years and no complaints as to quality of signal or service. I know one of my neighbors is cancelling his DirecTv to take advantage of a Dish TV special as to pricing.

Seems like every time you want to change DirecTV programming you're faced with either a more expensive option OR a lesser option because they no longer offer the one you have..I mean you can keep present programming but changes seem to be a gotcha, IMHO.

Sorry, didn't recognize Dish TV is a brand. I was speaking in general for the small, 24" dish type providers.

I've heard of people losing signals during rain, snow and wind.

Definitely afraid of the gotcha sort of problem.

I have DirecTV and I love it. I've had it for a little over four years and and can only think of three times that I lost service for more than a few minutes. There's a blip in service every now and then, but nothing to complain about and barely noticeable.

Don't listen to all the cable propaganda about how satellite will go out when the weather is bad... mine never has. When I had cable where I used to live, it would go out for hours at a time regularly.

I was skeptical about satellite at first, but where I live, there are no other options. But I'm pretty well sold on DirecTV. Next time I move the dish is coming with me... no more cable.

If you are referring to Dish Network, avoid them like the plague. I used to work for a credit card company. In 6 years I have talked to HUNDREDS of customers who were disputing unauthorized Dish billings. If the system does not work, Dish tells you to box it up and return it. In some cases Dish claims the equipment was not received and keeps billing your card. In one case Dish was billing the customer's card 4 years after she cancelled the service. I think the Attorney Generals of a few states are suing them. I know nothing about sat systems but my buddy is happy with Direct TV FWIW :-)

We've had Directv for about 6 months now, and it's been great. We've never experienced a signal loss, but we didn't have trouble with Comcast, either.

The thing I like best about Directv is the DVR! I refuse to watch live tv now -- it actually has commercials you have to watch! Not for me.

I just set it to record any show I'm possibly interested in, then I can watch when I feel like it. No more HAVING to be in front of the tv at 7 o'clock to watch Friends -- and no having to suffer through all the stupid/annoying/nasty commercials, either!

Watch out for your service contract! I signed up for a free HD DVR recorder option and it came with a 2 year minimum. Out of the blue I get transferred from LA to Seattle. The wife falls in love with a house that we buy, only later to find out the community CCR's do not allow satellite dishes. I go to DirectV to explain my problem about cutting short the contract and I can't take it with me. Their reply was to bill me for the remainder of the contract. The customer service was no help. I offered to send written proof of everything and they didn't care.
After that, I will watch paint dry before going with Directv again.

I can look out my window and see a great big tower with several satellite dishes. It belongs to the local cable company. Guess how cable gets their programming. :D

My girlfriend has had Dish Network satellite TV for about fourteen years. She does occasionally lose signal during storms. She was losing signal every time the wind blew until I climbed up on her roof and trimmed the mulberry tree so the branches weren't in front of the dish. Overall, it has been far more reliable than cable.

In my experience, satellite TV only fails during dramatically intense turd-floating hellbender storms.

i have direct tv as well with the Tevo deal.. i love it. you have so much morememory than cable and more channels as well.. granted i only watch 8 channels but over all you get more for your $$.. the only downside is that when bad storms come through you lose signal. i like it better than cable mostly

My parents have Dish Network as well and had the same problem. Since the switch, whenever i've gone to visit them their picture is frequently interrputed by an error message saying the system is looking for signal.

Prior to the switch, it was super reliable and never really had any problems unless it was a really intense storm.

I have so much stuff recorded, it would take a week or more to watch it all. By then, the signal should be back on....:)

you and me both man . i save them for sick and or rainy days. i have 42% left on the memory and there is sooo much recorded its not even funny. i doubt i could use all the space onthat thing unless i start recording porn haha:D

Had dish for several years, it got frustrating w/the "searching for signal" interuptions plus any rain would interfere with the picture. Last year my wife decided to "bundle" with quest and switched us over to Direct TV no problems with service or signal. Customer service been good.
When we cancelled Dish they became flippant, and said we will be back w/in 6 months.

ST~
