From the website:
Dismals Canyon was chosen as one of the shooting locations for the filming of the Discovery Channel special, "When Dinosaurs Roamed America".
The canyon was selected because its vegetation and broad leaf trees are typical of those that existed when dinosaurs roamed the Earth some 100 to 200 million years ago. The canyon's tall trees and ferns are similar to fossils paleontologists have found near dinosaur relics.

This is only a 1.5 mile round trip by the main trail. It has many side trails, and there are innumerable different routes through and over the rock formations if you want to explore. The canyon and it's offshoots continue beyond the private property forming this park, so I was off the property for some time. No idea of the actual mileage, but was moving for about 5 hours nonstop.
My camera's exposure has been screwed up for awhile, and so have some of the controls, plus it has been waterlogged and bashed countless times, so getting decent pics was a challenge. I haven't even posted pics the last couple of weeks with the camera messing everything up. This was its last hurrah, as I killed it(and almost myself, literally) right at the end, getting a little too stupid for my own good.
Hopefully some of these will be worth looking at. I've got a couple of videos I want to add, though they'll take awhile to upload after the pics are done.
This was a really cool place to visit...

The hike begins at a swimming hole formed by a small dam that feeds this waterfall.

For size perspective, the only self-pic I took(so there it is, no matter how bad it came out).

Lots of rock formations of unusual shapes, interesting colors and patterns.
Some of these pics may look very green, due to the moss or whatever growing on the rocks, trees, everything. Because of the lowered exposure I was using to keep the camera's tendency to exaggerate the brightness in check, many did not come out true to life. It was more green in reality, not less.
Sometimes you look around, and it is almost surreal. I really did feel like I was in an episode of "Land of the Lost" or something.

I thought this first one looked like a turtle.

The reflections may make it look murky, but the water was very clear.

Interesting place.

This was 100% necessary for my survival:mad:

Youtube is giving me fits, so far failing to load either of the videos that actually show anything, but not telling me why:confused:

OwenM,
I have been to the Dismals several times. It is an awesome place. You have some great pics, but I think you would agree pictures do not do this place justice. The Dismals is an amazing place that does not get very much attention. I think for a while it was closed for safety reasons. Several years ago I went there with a group of kids from a church camp. They sang in one of the caverns there and it was amazing. I must go back soon. Thanks for the post and the pics.

Looks like a really cool place. Do you know anything about the geology? What is the formation that generated the large monoliths?

Not something I'm knowledgeable about, but there's a section on one of the pages of the website:

Oh, I agree. Pics(especially not mine!) aren't going to do it justice. One trip isn't enough to really take in everything you're seeing, either. At some point I will go back, and spend more time.
Safety reasons...that place would be great to take kids, but I wouldn't let them roam around unsupervised. I'm a big kid myself, sometimes, and can get off the chain a little when I'm outdoors. I got banged up a bit(about to go see my chiropractor), and had a couple of close calls that could have been bad on some slick places with nowhere to go but down. Some things are a lot easier to climb than they are to get down from...
If I get to take my godson, and maybe a friend and her kids, I'll have to play responsible adult:rolleyes:
That place sure was a lot of fun, though.
