dismantling the Civilian

Hi. I'm left handed and considering the purchase of a Civilian with G10 scales. I plan to move the clip to the other side of the handle by drilling and tapping for the screws. Doing this will require me to dismantle the knife for drilling. This leads me to my question - is it possible to dismantle this knife, ie. is it held together by screws or rivots? In all the pictures I've seen I can't tell. Thanks for your time.

Lee - I'm sorry, but I believe this would be quite difficult to do, unless you are a knifemaker or skilled machinist. They are held together by very tight press fit pins.

There are also a few other hurdles;

The Civilian has one steel scale for the clip screws to go into. The line-up of the of the new holes would have to be identical.

The latest version has a new clip that is not ambi, so you would have to get the old clip or try to rebend the new clip (pretty tough).

We make so few Civilians that a left hand version would be obsolete long before we sold the run.

If I were you, I would try to chase down a Matriarch as they are Ambi, but tip up carry (as opposed to the Civilian which is tip down carry).

Sal,

I am pretty much ambi, but favor my left hand. I am awaiting 2 black handled Matriarchs from overseas for everyday carry. I just recently purchased a numbered black handled Matriarch which has a tip-down configuration. Were the serial-numbered ones tip-down only? Btw, it is #103. Thanks...

Attila - All of the Matriarchs use the Endura handle which is Tip Up. This means that the tip of the knife blade, when folded, is at the top of the pocket, near the clip pointing UP and the pivot end of the knife is down in the pocket.

Tip Down is when the clip is fastened hear the pivot end of the knife and the tip of the blade is pointed DOWN in the pocket.

Sal,

Gotcha. I misread it & stated it incorrectly. Thanks for clearing it up! ^_^

Btw, is the Gunting & Chinook still slated for late 3rd quarter release?

Lee, the Civilian is pretty lefty friendly (for a righthanded knife) and IMHO the benefits of converting it to full lefty would be tiny in relation to the work required. After carrying it for a short time you'll find you have no trouble whipping it out

Attila - Yes on the "Chinook" & "Gunting". Serious pieces, those two...serious minds behind them too. (Jim Keating & Bram Frank)

Sal,

Kewl! I can't wait to get my sweaty little paws on them!!! I agree, they are both some great designs by some good ppl.

If I heard correctly, they should also be available with the reversible clip. If so, I'd gladly pick up 2 of each... Heh, I LOVE this stuff!!!

Attila - Sorry for the confusion. The first run of the Gunting and the Chinook will not have reversible clips. The Gunting might, but the first run of Chinooks will probably use the Military clip. Making an ambi clip that follows the contour of the handle is difficult.

Sal,

Thank you for the info. I just like to get 2 of each model that I REALLY like for carry purposes. Guess I will make do with one of each, unless they come with the reversible clip option in the future.
