No place but here can I show off a cheap shell handled knife I am happy with and am actually spending money to make a nice display for. I think it was Friend Codger who pointed this little thing out to me. Mint condition little knife with red handles advertising 'Days Work' chewing tobacco. Took just a little effort to find the pressing plate that embossed the name on the chaw before it was cut and packaged. I think I'll primer the thing, then paint it white, then try and frame the whole thing with the knife in the middle. Once done, once I have spent time and treasure on this little project, the net dollar value of the display will be, depending on how one feels about shell-handled knives, about fifty cents.

Phil,
Your ability to find related artifacts to display with your knives is astounding!:jerkit:

Given enough time, I think even the shell handle knives will have decent value. Because they have a tendency to get dented, finding the nice clean ones will become harder eventually.

Just my opinion, FWIW.

Nice display, I'd like to do something like that, but I don't think the wife would let me hang it up.

I have a bayonet that I keep thinking about making a wall plaque for, but never do...

Maybe someday.

Phil, Don't paint it white.

I can paint that a nice metallic silver or steel gray basecoat/clearcoat or give it a semi-gloss finish if you'd like. Actually I can paint it any color you want.

Something like this color:

No, its not mine. I wish. :p

Drop me an e-mail if you're interested. Its the least I can do for ya.

Ha! I knew you guys would understand! Chris, I thank you and will take you up on your offer. As I always write, generousity is a trait of ths forum. Thanks, I think a nice silver would do just fine. I need your address!

Mike, for sure, yes, I will seek out some other DaysWork stuff to display on the 'canvas' that Rupe is going to paint for me.

Phil,
I have some old display items left over from my days in the tobacco business. I don't think I have any Days 'O Work, but do have some Skoal & Copenhagen metal signs.

Dale

The tobacco item is in the mail tomorrow for a professional paint job thanks to Rupestris.

Dale... You are too kind! Tell you what... I would like a Skoal sign, if you have one, which would look great with my Skoal sharpfinger. And you can probably make a neat display with the Copenhagen trapper I will send you in trade.

Now, does anyone have that car up there I can swap ya a slightly used Frontier knife for?

Phil

Phil,
Now I have to dig in my shed out back. Unlike LT, I only have 1 shed, mostly filled with Christmas decorations, items my kids are storing there, and JUNK, plus a few boxes of tobacco related stuff.

Time to go shed diving! :D  :D

Phil, Your mail didn't show up today but I'm expecting it tomorrow. I've already got the color mixed and ready to shoot. I went with a silver with graphite gray added so that the lettering shows up a little darker on your display piece.
I can't wait to see the finished piece with the Days 'o' Work knife in the foreground.

I'll have back in the mail by Friday if all goes well.

Well, here it is. Big thank you to the fine paint job by Rupestris. You guys wouldn't believe the difference from the rusty thing I sent him. Just beautiful and his color choice was excellent. Thank you, Chris!

Another friend came through as well with some more tobaccoiana 'cause I wanted more than just the mperial im the display. I thought a Schrade Cope and a Skoal would look good. So Ovet came through with some Skoal ink pens and a deck of cards. Thank you Dale!

Display is about 2" thick, grooves in the wood frame for the wood backing, the metal tobacco stamp, and the front glass. Comes apart with a couple of hidden screws. I wouldn't have done as well as I did if my two knife pals hadn't been involved... I wanted to honor their contributions to my little salute to tobacco juices stain on the side of a ford pickup and bad gums.

Not done yet, a couple more things to add, I will take my time. Yes, an Uncle Albert can would be a nice touch, but I already have a nice display of the knives and cans.

Thanks again my friends!

Lookin' good Phil!

Sorry it took so long to reply. I just got back in town. Glad I could help on this one. I'll keep an eye out Downriver for more tobacco stuff and keep you posted on what I find.

Chris.

No problem Phil, glad I could help.

Do want to do a Copenhagen display? I may be able to be of some assistance there also. :D

Dale
