Displaying knives

Ive seen many beautiful displays of Buck knives and I wonder how do the people who display their knives in velvet lined glassed faced wooden cases or mirrored back glass shelves keep track of their original packaging and papers?

Especially when dealing with multiplies of the same knife.

I’m assuming the display knives are not users and if the display were separated the box and paperwork would be important for collectibility and add value.

When I bring out 3 or 4 knives at the same time I make sure the knives with packaging stay separated but not apart. Especially when I’m looking at the same model number knives.

What’s your system?

For my 303s, I use 3m painters tape. I cut small pieces about .25" square and put one on the box and one on the blade (same number in both places, of course). The numbers match my inventory list as well where I keep details about the knife.

I place a piece of paper with a brief description of the knife in the box. Most of mine that I display are customs so I might write something like. "905 - NICKEL - STAG -.#0204"
The knife that would go in that box is a 905 Mountain Man Bowie with nickel silver guard, stag handle, and serial # 0204.
Mirror polished blade would be "MP"
Satin finished blade would be "SATIN"
Brass bolster or guard would be "BRASS"
Nickel silver bolster or guard would be "NICKEL"
And so forth.

I as well have all my knives on a list with the same type of descriptions including if it has a sheath, paperwork, box, or anything else.

I keep mine in a container in my shop so I wrap mine in butcher paper, wax side out, like a Christmas present. I write all info on the BP as to the knife that goes with that box.

Since I rarely sell anything I'll never find out if that system works though...

I keep notes on a spiral notebook with a diagram and order of knives. Many of mine did not come with a box. Those that did I have folded and
stored away together in a larger box. You have to see the display to get the idea. DM

There are 50 knives in this display. Not including the Buck sharpening stones, guides, extra sheaths as examples, ax, ect.. So, boxes are stored at home. My wife is on the right. One of my retired & respected supervisor stopped by to see us with his wife. Some of Leesa's work is also on
the table. DM

Glad to read you guys have a method. I’ve wanted to ask for awhile. MT Pokt’s 303 display as well as DM and geldlicks displays are exactly the ones that give me organizational anxiety. Thanks!

Christian, I had this goal in mind since 2003 of putting together a display like this. I first displayed it at the Buck factory in 2008. I got some
good advice and kept adding to it. I think now I have what I need for a good representation of Buck knives at a show. DM

One thing I can add here is that Sack Ups is the best method I've found for safety storing my 112 collection..I wish I had used them years ago! I like the 12 knife roll.

All above is good advice and methods. Not saying mine is going to be any better, but I did write a article in the BCCI newsletter on this subject. I may have copied it here back several (maybe 10 by now) years ago. Just another spot with photos and ideas.

The absolute best advice I can give is to start doing something right now to keep track of your information for the future, don't delay or you will get behind like I did and never catch up. I have a bunch I have no idea what I paid for them....and don't use cheap rubber bands around boxes or knives. They will rot fast. I have a black plastic trash bag full of boxes that had the information written on white note paper wrapped around the box and held with rubber band.
Now all the cheap rubber bands are rotten and broken and all I have is a bag-o-boxes and confusing slips of paper.

I’m not very organized.

Knives in 2 glass topped, 7 drawer displays and a repurposed glass top humidor.

Boxes on top of a gun cabinet and a medium plastic tote(no pic)

Sheaths without Buck boxes are in other boxes with piece of paper inside with what goes inside( to a certain degree)

I keep mine, (not many) in this.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

red, you have a handsome collection of 112's and 500's. Both have 3" blades. Which do you like the most? DM

David, The 112 remains my favorite. It just feels right in my hand.
Thanks bucksway, I appreciate that.

Of all my Bucks I have ever used a 112 Ecolite is my favourite. Light, strong it seems perfect..

I’d love to display my knives but the biggest problem is thieves.
Not that I hangout with thieves but if someone broke into my house a display case full of knives would be easy pickings.
Like back in the day my dad having a nice gun cabinet with glass doors, I would never do this now a days.

I keep mine, (not many) in this.
