Hi,
I’ve been forging my hidden tang knives with a full distal taper. Similiar to how Ed Caffrey tapers his knives, I have a diamond shaped cross section that has the distal taper extend into the ricasso. I found this creates an elegant blade shape, and also insures a good fit at the guard. I’m curious, however, what all of you who forge distal taper knives do to ensure a good layout of your ricasso and rest of your blade? Do you only distal taper from the plunge forward, leaving the ricasso parallel? I used to just eyeball things and get them close enough, but I’d rather spend an extra few minutes in layout to have a good reference to get things dialed in.
Thanks!
