I know there's lots of GPS, compass and other navigation apps available, but here is one that may have flown under the radar for most. It's called Distance - Find My Distance. It also happens to be free. Essentially, you drag your fingertip across the map or satellite image, and the app provides the distance. You can use it to trace a route or section of river. You don't have to trace a straight line. The screen shots on the link only show the map. I tested accuracy by using the satellite image, and finding a local football field. Using my fingertip, I measured the field as 303 feet. I'd think a stylus would be more accurate. Even so, using my fingertip, accuracy was off by only 1%. It also provides distance in miles along with the usual metric measurements. I think this will prove to be quite a useful tool.
