I'm new to custom knives and am hooked. Folders are a favorite of mine. I started w/Jeff Hall, K. Lambert, G. Lightfoot.

now i'm in the market for a diving folder for spearfishing, boating, etc. I've looked at the mission knives. Is there anything else you might suggest as far as a custom dive knife? I'm also interested in what Jay Fisher has to offer.

any help offered is greatly appreciated

I really don't know who to recommend (dive knives are a bit out of my area here on the prairies). If you list some dimensions (blade length) and material/design requirements, it might narrow things down as far as maker recommendations. You might also try posting in the makers section under the Q&A subforum.

Good luck,

Nathan

i dont know what your price range is but Tom Mayo is a custom maker who makes very high quality knives (some say the best of the best). I myself have never owned any personally but he is one if the few makers that uses talonite. Talonite and stellite are super alloys that are mostly chromium and cobalt. They have less then 3% iron and will not rust. The problem with them is that they are great for stuff like field dressing animals and salt water but if used "hard" the edge tends to roll. The other problem is that it is extremely expesive ($200 a pound) and very hard to work with.

All in all if you want a folding dive knife thats a custom then look for something made from talonite. Other steels that are good for diving are H-1 (spyderco uses this but it isnt a custom knife) another rust proof steel is x-15 t.n. (both boker and benchmade use this steel) you might want to see if any custom makers use these steels

Last time I recommended(and spoke to, after the fact) Tom, he told me that he does not take orders anymore.

I am do diver (15 ft. with a snorkel is as deep as I go :o ) but I am curious as to why you would choose a folder as opposed to a fixed blade for a diving knife. Seems to me that the extra steps of opening and closing a knife would be undesireable in an underwater environment and the usual folder benefits of portability and concealability wouldn't really apply.

If you can find a Mayo Covert, I would recommend that, as far as folders go. Why wouldn't you want an FB?

i've gotten hung up on fb's hanging off my leg. I scuba but freedive when I spearfish. I don't want anything that lends itself to a snag.

I tried putting the fb's on my chest, arm, and whatnot. i don't like it hanging from my body. a folder w/a super duty clip can fit inside of a lash tab or even my trunks. I know it may sound strange, but i've been diving w/ a folder for 10 years, purposely buying cheap ones because i know they will corrode in short order.

OK, I understand completely. Then I would strongly suggest that you find yourself a Mayo Covert!!

If you really insist on having a folder for diving, I would suggest one of Spyderco's Atlantic or Pacific Salt models. They are made of H-1 which, by all accounts is impervious to rust. I have a plain edge Pacific Salt and I am very please with it.

I LOVE my yellow Salt 1!! It is a great knife. I swim with it in the ocean all the time.
