Dive Knife?

Thinking of using Assault Shaker as Dive Knife. Assuming it gets a fresh water rinse as with the rest of your gear. How do you think it will hold up. I think the very reasonable price and solid appearance make the Shaker a good candidate, although losing it would really piss me off. Any thoughts?

I think I would go with a Mean Street or a Satin Jack. Something a little bit bigger than the AS. The AS I would use as a back up. I guess keep it under the wet suit. Neck knife config.

Hi Ed,
I don’t wanna say anything about the INFI steel, but as a long time scuba diver I can tell you that when you are underwater you could need some serration on your knife to gain cutting power. I never take with me serrated blades (don’t like them much) apart from when I go underwater. If your life depends on the cutting power of your knife a serrated blade (partially, al least) is a “must have”, IMO!
Bye

I agree with The Bear. Dive knives should have serrations, in my opinion. While many believe dive knives are for protection against sharks, fact of the matter is more divers have died getting caught up in rope or monofilament than by sea creatures attacking.

I would also recommend a coated blade. It has a higher degree of corrosion resistance and adding to that INFI (which already has solid corrosion resistance properties) and you should be okay.

I am a spearfisherman and actually would like to have a thin stiletto type blade that I can use to place a killing thrust to the brain of a fish on the end of my spear. INFI would be wonderful and I may ask Jerry to build me one someday for that purpose.

Anywaya Ed, one thing I often do is put a small knife under the sleeve of my wetsuit by the wrist, and another larger knife (w/serrations) on my leg. Apply a thin coat of oil before the dive trip, wash with fresh water afterwards, and re-coat. You should be good to go!!

Thanks guys.
Actually I prefer a big knife for SCUBA. The main use for this would be Freedive Spearfishing. Mostly to brain a still fighting fish after a non-kill shot of which I'm sorry to say I make fairly often. I have a Riffe Knife, but I don't love it. You guys are absolutely right about the serrations. Had to free myself on local (NJ) wrecks more than once. I think I'll keep the AS anyhow. Don't want to dirty the Pepper. EC

Ed-

The Busse recommendations above are great.

However, for a dive knife, the powers of INFI are really moot--as you're not going to be doing alot of chopping, or heaving cutting--at least not for recreational diving or even spear-fishing. You need a "monofiliment line cutter", occasional prybar (okay so the Busses are good for that), and tank clanker (for signalling).

I just picked up a Mission MPT-Ti from fellow forumite Sam Hinds for scuba diving. Just dive, use, and forget. No corrosion--ever. That's my kind of dive knife.

Just my $0.02.

:p

Here's what I picked up for Diving.
Then after the Dive I can build a shelter, clean the food, and whittle.

It's a Satin Jack with serrations.

Here's one more option for you.....

You can get either of these from Marc out of the custom shop.
Both are very cool and will last you forever, not to mention save your life in a bad situation.
