I have a second BK-62 on the way, so now I feel like I could try modifying one…

Has anybody shortened the blade without having to redo the heat treat?

I’d like to take about an off…

Thanks!

Hi Plains,

You can certainly get it shorter. If you keep the edge cool you can do it safely.
Because the blade has nearly the same geometry for the entire length (except swedge and tip), this is one knife that might shorten without getting TOO weird. Though the tip may end up a bit thick.

I think 4.5-4.675" is the sweet spot for these. (obv. I prefer to make them that way from scratch)
ALSO, because this is an un-coated blade with bolt-on scales, you could in fact re-heat-treat it if things went horribly awry.

I like the longer blade length.... but I'd probably also like a shorter one too.... haha.
Should be pretty easy. Just keep it wet/cold.

Take lots of pics!

Slow and cool is what I was thinking.
I like the length of the BK-16 better, so thats what Ill be shooting for.

I will get pics from beginning to end. Itll probably be my XMas break project.

Have you considered an EK51?
What is an EK-51?
Hence, no! LOL!

I looked it up, thanks a lot, just when I had myself convinced I dont need to get into any other knives, you send me down this rabbit hole!

I had an EK back in the 90’s, it was a dagger style with both edges sharpened. I tried to make each edge a different angle, one for cutting/slicing, the other for “chopping.” I ended up selling it, probably for too little! I had paid $25 for it new and sold it for about that much or just a little more.

so - what you had was the EK model 4 (or kabar EK44)
the single edge version is the EK45 (I had a blackjack EK model 5 back in the 90s)
the 50 (clip point) & 51 have the same cross section handle as the full sized EKs, just a little shorter -- but you could make (or modify) a set of kephart handles to fit.

This is what mine looked like, the one blade was only halfway down.

I think that was the model 3. The 4 is a full double edge and the 5 is a "Bowie"/straight clip.

I received a second BK-62 with Micarta scales…
Im liking the traction I get with the micarta versus the wood.

Im going to use it for a while with the micarta scales before I start modifying the tip. Part of my issue with the 62’s length is I get a lack of control which may be overcome by the different scales.

Ill let you guys know how thats progressing.

So much for this project! LOL!

I like the BK-62 better with Micarta scales…

My son came home for Christmas and he ended up with the second BK-62!

So I will not be shortening a BK-62 anytime in the near future.

Excellent.
IMO, that knife is awesome with micarta scales. If you want a shorter variation, you can find one that started life that way.
