I got this knife from Abe Elias (Canranger on Bladeforums) of Diving Sparrow Knife Works right here on Bladeforums back in May of this year and have been using it extensively ever since.
Here's Abe's description of the knife:
I weighed the knife and it comes in at 5.95 oz. He's also worked up the model in 1/8" thick stock so that should reduce the weight a bit.
The knife has been used extensively for everything from woodworking to food prep to mundane tasks like opening the mail. Since May I haven't had to do anything to it other than strop after every use on a piece of leather loaded with green compound.
The handle on this knife might be the most comfortable handle I've ever had the pleasure of holding and after long sessions of carving I found my hands didn't ache like they did when using other knives for similar work. Plus the spalted Maple slabs have, with use, gotten a bit more grippy (the way I really like my handles) while maintaining their rugged good looks.
The spine of the knife works fine for throwing sparks from a firesteel but they're not so square that you end up cutting your thumbs when using a reinforced grip for strength and control while carving. I tend to use the spine of the saw on my SwissTool for throwing sparks anyway so this doesn't really come into play in the woods but I thought I'd give it a try for you anyway.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with this knife. I actually got TWO knives from Abe at the same time and the other one hasn't seen much use yet because I just keep coming back to the Sparrow Special to see how much it will really handle before begging for mercy. I would like to get my hands on the 1/8" thick model for a comparison to see if I can wring the same performance out of the lighter/thinner model.
If the 3/16" thick model can cut, slice, and shear the way it does I can only imagine a thinner model doing those things even better.
Paired with my axe and multitool I think I'd be very well equipped for an extended trip to the woods. As a matter of fact, Abe has invited me to go on a canoe trip with him in the future and I think I'm going to take him up on it as he's a guy who knows canoes and canoeing inside and out.
