Hi Guys,
I am not new to bladeforums, but I am new to this page. I want to go diving with my sog multitool and was wondering how to clean off surface rust from salt water, and fresh water. Also is the titanium coating (gold finish) anygood for that sort of thing? Thanks

Hi Reed,

To play it safe, I would not recommend diving with the tool unless a shorter life expectancy for the tool is alright with you.

That being said...every piece in our tools are made of various grades of stainless steel (mostly 420). The TiNi coating will assist in corrosion resistant on the coated parts (those being the plier head, handles and link between the handles). All other parts would be exposed stainless steel. If you were to dive with the tool, I would suggest a heavy coating of protectant on all surfaces. As part of your clean up at the end of a dive, I would suggest complete disassembly of the tool for cleaning and reapplication of oil.

Removal of surface rust can be attempted with application of a light grade steel wool.

Disclaimer: Rust is not covered under warranty,

though we have been known to clean and service tools on occasion returned in this condition.

I hope I answered your questions. If not, or if you have anything else, please let me know.

Thanks Ron,
I am expecting shorter life of the tool but need it down there.
