Some years back, I bought the Dixie Gun Works replica of the J.D. Searles bowie knife. You all remember that knife, the rather elegant version with no clip on the point and a handsome ebony hilt. Well, the Dixie replica is made in Italy and mine is extremely well made. My only problem with it is that it came with a leather scabbard that, no matter how nicely made, simply was not historically accurate for the knife. So, I recently contacted Dixie to see if they had a more appropriate scabbard and it turns out that they do, one based upon the scabbard for the Col. Henry Fowler Searles Bowie in the Alamo Museum. I have ordered one and will keep you all posted when I get it. In the mean time, the item number for the knife is KE6701 and for the scabbard is KE6704, with the prices now $250 and $129.95, respectively. That is a lot of money, but I expect the workmanship on the scabbard to equal that on the knife and, if it does, it will be worth it to me.

Beautiful looking knife Hugh, I am interested in your comments on the new sheath you ordered.

Open carry should be quite the fashion statement in Va.:D

I picked up the sheath over the weekend and it is not quite a copy of the one in the Alamo Museum but it is black leather with silver plated brass throat and tip end on it. These are substantial pieces of metal and by no means flimsy. The throat part extended over the top of the sheath and I found that the opening was not quite long enough for my knife, but remember that my knife is at least 7-8 years old and there may have been some minor changes in the width of the blade over that time. In any case, it took but a few seconds with a small saw blade to open it up the additional 1/32 of an inch that I needed, It was not a lot and well within allowable variance, given the age of my knife. I should be curious to know what anyone buying a new set finds.

There is a substantial belt stud on the throat part that has a large cap on it that will slip over the belt or sash and hold that sucker in very nicely. But they do suggest that you may want to buy their Enfield bayonet belt frog to go with it, which I did. It is a very snug fit, but it will fit, and there is a belt to keep it good and tight, as well as closing the top so that there is no way that the stud might slip out.

All in all, I am very well satisfied with the sheath, as I am with the knife. For those with any familiarity with the J.D. Searles knives, they are some of the classiest of the Bowies out there, even if they don't fit the standard image of a Bowie.
