DIY belts?

From all the info that I've heard....not a good idea...the adhesive that the belt makers use is special....not sure what makes them special....resist heat and stays flexable....safer to buy belts....just what I've heard, I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if I can learn more;)

I've tried several times in the past. Some adhesives were promising. I would use high tension, and long run times for test. The draw back is the very high pressure, and heat added to the joint when actually hogging steel. Each and every one I tried failed. You don't want to get hit by a high speed belt. especially a gorse grit belt, running at high speed. It sounds like a gun going off in your face. Rips clothing and flesh with abandon. and makes you gun shy as hell. I got a bad batch of name brand, high dollar belts that were bad once. Enough of them broke to make me gun shy of the grinder for a year!! It's never knowing when your going to get hit or how badly, that really makes for a fun day at the grinder. Use good belts folks! They're as important as the steel you're using. I opted for cheap belts when I first started out and a course one broke and smacked the faceshield off my head! It was lucky I was wearing one.

there is a tutorial on making them on the british blades forum.
i havnt tried it though im happy to fork over a few bucks for peice of mind.

I bought a box of 50 off Ebay once. They were 3m so I thought they were fine. I soon found out why they were so cheap because they all blew up. I got so I could tell when it was going to happen and stepped aside just in time. It did take about 10 times before I learned. They were 2 x 132" and with that extra length it looked like a huge snake coming at me!

As someone who makes most of his own tools, belts are one thing I'd rather buy. I too, wear full face mask when grinding and sometimes, when doing heavy turning/milling. Don't write off good ole McMaster. They sell "generic" alum oxide Nortons in up to 320 grit, very inxpensively and those are nice belts. And when and where it matters, I use some ceramics, Regals & co premium belts I have.
