So, with all these big KaBar choppers and kukris and the new BK&T Kukri due out 'soon', I was thinking - How am I going to sharpen these monsters?
Then CM_Rick posted his DIY sharpener in the BK&T subforum and this inspired me to try a couple of variations...
Prototype cross-stick sharpener, about 12"x18" and will hold sandpaper strips up to 12.5" long, giving you a long draw for those big blades. Using 500grit wet/dry sandpaper, I was able to get my BK9 to slice phonebook paper effortlessly. And it can be adjusted to either 20°, 22.5°, or 25°.

Here's a smaller 6"x13" one-sided solid sharpener with a rounded-over edge ...

The cross-stick is definitely safer to use by eiither holding it at the very top and inside the 'triangle'.
I'll play around with the design some more and maybe make it out of hardwood like oak or maple. I'll probably replace the wood screws with bolts and wing-nuts to make it adjustable and collapsible without the need of tools.
