DIY Cheap Kydex

I just got a Bradley Kimura XI and wanted a half sheath so I can open carry it (only legal way to carry it in Ohio), but I don't want to buy a custom one. I was looking into making a press and everything but was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative to the foam sold on the knife making sites.

I used my yoga mat (pipe down people, it's a requirement for living in California [emoji14] ) and it worked as well as I'd hoped. I phrase it that way because I have nothing to compare it to. I've made but one kydex sheath.

Anything that has that rough consistency is likely to work for at least one or two moldings. Probably several. Or not. I could be totally wrong, but you can always re-mold the plastic, and soft foam/rubber is easy to find.

Cool! Yea i was going to make one, 2 at the max, so I didn't want to buy special foam, that was barely going to be used

Anthony, what is this Yo Ga thing you speak of? Sounds kind of flowery and sweet to me. :p

Cheap closed cell (typically blue) sleeping pad from the camping section of Wal-Mart or similar. Should be about ten or fifteen bucks (if you don't have an old one around anyway). Those puzzle mat pieces for gym floors work well, but I think they cost more. Heard of people using foam knee pads with success, but never tried 'em.

No no, you got it all wrong. Yo Ga is a manly form of martial arts. It includes things like bullets and, uh, flying axes and heavy metal and women in skin tight clothes ( :D ) and whatnot. Far too manly a sport to cross the eastern border of California (although north, I hear, has been breached), but given enough time I reckon it'll make it out to ya. :)

Oh jeez. I just remembered that I ended up using a closed cell foam kneeling pad from the dollar store instead of the yoga mat. The mat was kinda expensive and the kneeling pad was a whopping $1. More firm than the mat too.

Not sure if it matters, or why I did it, but I used sheets of aluminum foil between the kydex and foam. I probably read somewhere that it was a good idea. In any case, it all worked out well and I'll likely use the same setup if I ever make another kydex sheath.
